Sunday Stills: Something to #Do

January is National Hobby month according to some event sites.

Do you have something to do?

“A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away.” ~ Phyllis McGinley

What do you do all day if you’re retired? Even if you work full- or part-time, most of us enjoy hobbies of some kind.

After a lifetime of working in the leisure industry (public parks and recreation) and then university teaching in parks and recreation management for 10 years, I learned a thing or two about the various definitions of leisure.

Hobbies are a classification of the broad construct of “leisure.”

Students carefully "walk" their feet on the climbing wall.

Have you ever tried to define the word “leisure?” Does it manifest as a recreational activity, a wonderful cruise, or a spiritual experience in communing with nature?

If you answered yes to any, you would be correct. The definition of leisure is as varied as there are people on planet Earth.

The textbook definitions of leisure include five concepts or dimensions related to the overarching idea of “freedom to choose.”

In a nutshell, leisure is… being free from any sense of obligation; free time from work; recreational activity; freedom to engage in personally meaningful experiences, and lastly, a state of mind.

OK, back to “hobby,” which according to online dictionary sources, is an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation during one’s spare time and outside one’s regular occupation.

As for my hobbies which include walking/hiking, travel, caring for my dog, gardening, birding, and photography, I also consider blogging a hobby.

Some argue that blogging is not a hobby, but unless you are getting paid to do it, it is not work or an obligation from an external source. To blog is a choice and we have complete autonomy to write and share what we choose, when, and how much.

For those who disagree, many of us busy bloggers engage in “serious leisure.” Yes, it’s a “thing!” Before your eyes glaze over, please consider this information describing the Serious Leisure Perspective. (Perhaps now you know how “Second Wind Leisure Perspectives” was created).

Leisure is defined within the serious leisure perspective as an un-coerced, contextually framed activity engaged in during free time, which people want to do and, using their abilities and resources, actually do in either a satisfying or a fulfilling way (or both).

“Serious leisure is the systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer core activity that is highly substantial, interesting, and fulfilling and where, in the typical case, participants find a career in acquiring and expressing a combination of its special skills, knowledge, and experience.”

To illustrate this point, imagine you walk into a hospital/medical center for your doctor’s appointment. Who reaches out to help you first? Oftentimes you find an older volunteer who “works” at the information desk.

This man or woman likely works a pre-arranged schedule, attends meetings, abides by hospital rules, and carries out the mission of the hospital. Sounds a bit like a job doesn’t it? Part of what defines this as leisure time for the volunteer is it’s purely voluntary and a choice made by the volunteer to function in this capacity.

Many volunteers do so for social engagement and to continue giving back. These volunteers pictured below give their time to help rescue and support birds of prey and raptors in Northwest Idaho.

Blogging as Serious Leisure

Perhaps blogging can be viewed in this context. It is a choice, we don’t get paid, and no one is making us do it. For those of us who host challenges, it may feel a bit like work, we read and respond to comments, and make sure to maintain a schedule for the challenges. Once again this is all CHOICE. No one is making us do this except ourselves, which is the beauty of it. And yes, I LOVE hosting Sunday Stills!

Even if you don’t host challenges, you engage with your blog on a schedule you’ve created. Perhaps you post daily, weekly, monthly…it’s YOUR choice!

Most of our blogging journey is filled with engagement with others both online and in real life. When possible, I make a point of connecting with my fellow bloggers during my travels.

Blogging as serious leisure is still a hobby. But, your own perspective and opinion as a blogger is all that matters.

So hats off to all the bloggers out there who post at least once a week on a schedule and welcome to the club occupied by serious leisure participants.

Hobby or work? Once again, it’s your choice. I could go on and on sharing the definitions and research, but by now you get the picture.

  1. Blogger meetups are fun. We have some scheduled (or at least planned) for this month, one in Texas and another (with some of the same folks in your photo) in Arizona.
You pics of Antelope Canyon remind me that I haven’t visited there yet.

    • They are, darn, I wish it could have worked out to meet you in person! Next time! Please find time to visit Antelope. I recommend the Dixie tour of the Lower Canyon. Page is 5 hours drive from Scottsdale and you will want to stay overnight in Page and do a morning tour the next day. And Horseshoe Bend is two miles outside of Page. I hope you can fit it in, it’s worth it!

  4. Terrific post, Terri. Interesting to think about how we make our leisure, hobby and work choices and the acknowledgment that blogging really is a serious hobby. Your photos of Antelope canyon are stunning! It’s fun that you’ve enjoyed some connections with blogging friends in real life. 🙂

  6. I am always intrigued by the concept of ‘leisure’ and ‘relaxation’. Something happened to me as I grew up that made me avoid both of those, and never minded. I need a good friend like you to force me to relax and enjoy something new in life!

  7. Hi, Terri – Awesome prompt, research and discussion. Even though I have been blogging less recently (3-4 posts per month as opposed to my previous once every 6 days), I definitely consider blogging to be one of my top hobbies, along with reading, travel, hiking, and hanging out with friends and family. Within the last year I published over 40 blog posts, read over 60 books, traveled within 5 different countries, hiked some amazing trails and had awesome time with family and friends. Thanks for prompting this reflection.

  8. Terri, Your Antelope Canyon images are stunning. I don’t know how we missed it in our western travels. You and I share many of the same hobbies – travel, photography, gardening, birding, blogging. I consider blogging a hobby. I also enjoy reading. Do water aerobics and exercise classes count as a hobby?

    • Thank you again, Beth. Fitness activities fit more of the leisure definition in general rather than a hobby. But fitness can be considered serious leisure because of schedules, time consumed and other factors. And good for you that you engage in those activities.

  9. This was a great post Terri. Inspiring and a great piece to reflect upon what we see as hobbies and how we choose the “things we do”. And while I loved all your photos, I am so happy you included the Navajo flutist. The sound amidst the walls at Antelope Canyon cannot be described adequately in words. It is felt… I am going to try to join it…. And yes great to see all our local bloggers.

I also quilt, scrapbook, read, write, volunteer, walk (my dog), and play soccer. My blogging goal is to connect and I love the Sundaystills challenge. Thanks again for hosting.

  13. Hi Terri, this is a fun post chock full of beautiful photos and I have made note of your suggestion for Dixie Tours in Antelope Canyon. Maybe, this is the year we will get there.

Blogging is a hobby for me, and while not ‘serious’, it is important to me, just as tennis, photography, and weekly Mahjong games are. Many hobbies have fallen away, but these are the things that have ‘stuck’ with me over the years and I am still motivated by them to improve.

    Liked by 2 people

    • Thank you, Suzanne! I love how you describe blogging, and the best thing about what we do, is it is purely choice and that freedom makes these hobbies more dear to us. Your weekly Mahjong games sound delightful and you keep active with tennis. You have it all, my friend!

  14. I knew I would love this post, and I do! I love that you have met 50 bloggers in person! Wow! What you didn’t say is that many of them you’ve spent lots of quality time with. The other thing you didn’t mention was the additional phone calls that keep you connected when you can’t be together. We never have to walk or run errands alone if we have our phones in hand!I’ve been one of the lucky ones to benefit from your friendship.

I love the term serious leisure. You are one of the best equipped blogger to talk about leisure! Blogging is a hobby that encompasses many other hobbies, like Graham mentioned.

AND, like your other SS readers, I love your dreamy pictures! We traveled to Gilbert on Friday. The lots are so big, they reminded me of where we lived in Indianapolis, IN. We found a great place to eat lunch called the Euro Cafe.

Of course, I’ve benefited as much from our friendship as well! We went to Gilbert today to see Vanessa, and Friday we visited Jodies house in progress. We stopped in Peoria at a huge rec center/Park facility. Talk about leisure lol! We start driving back first thing Monday morning. Talk soon!

  15. Wow, Terri, you packed a lot into this post. I consider blogging a hobby but considering that I’ve been at it for over ten years, it is a pretty serious one (seriously fun). Travel and photography probably count too. It was so great to see you and Cheryl for lunch. I will probably use the same picture in an upcoming post. 🙂

As you know, I am loving your photos from Antelope Canyon. I’m curious after seeing the one of the group and the one of you alone, did you get any suggestions of what colors to wear for your tour? Those vibrant, contrasting colors are fabulous against the reds and oranges of the canyon walls.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thank you, Janis! Seriously fun is right! Honestly, I didn’t think much about wearing any particular color in the canyon. My rust colored down jacket and green shirt worked and these are colors I normally wear. It was 35F that morning, you can see how bundled up the group of young women were. I suppose I want bloggers to know that what we do with our blogs is fun and utilizes our talents.

I am now trying to write my post so I’ll link back to yours shortly. Your words about blogging being a choice are spot on and I feel very much the same as you. As always your photos are fabulous and tell the stories very well. Well done to all those and you, for their blogging challenges and link parties – it’s a form of social engagement.

  18. Terri, you are enjoying life to the nth degree – I see that in this blog post and all your blog posts. Retirement looks good on you. My definition of “leisure” has done an about-face from years ago. When I was in my 20s, I traveled extensively. None of my friends wanted to travel – they moved out, got their own apartments or had car payments, so often had money woes. I was fortunate – I have no siblings and my parents paid for my college tuition, bought me a new car to start college and encouraged me to see the world before I got married, had kids and job commitments. I continued living at home spending money on vacations and photography. Circumstances in our family stopped me from going on those annual vacations when my father took all the money out of their joint bank and annuity accounts and fled the country leaving Mom penniless. Thank goodness the house was paid for. I took care of us and those vacations became a distant memory. My mom has been gone since January 2010, but I now lack the desire to resume those trips. Personally, I don’t feel international travel is as safe for many reasons. I worry about COVID. I went on several cruises back then; now if you go on a cruise you might end up with a norovirus – yes it is me; I worry too much. I have been reading about the “Icon of the Seas” which is more like a floating resort … I honestly have no interest in spending time with 10,000 people on the largest cruise ship in the world. I only had three places I really wanted to travel to: France, Italy and Alaska. I studied French for years and should have gone to France while I still was fluent – I am far from fluent now.

Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace simpler things – going to a park, being out in nature and having a renewed interest in photography. My hobbies have also changed a lot over the years, but that’s because of my walking regimen and blogging. Gardening and reading have been left in the dust. I agree that blogging is a hobby, one that due to the nature of my blog, (walking/taking photo and writing) encompasses more and more time. I am grateful for my neighbor pushing me into starting a blog – I started it for her and now I do it for me.

In my post today, I did mention leisure, but not ‘til the very end. I planned to retire and have now “unretired” – I really only wanted more “me time” to pursue other hobbies. So I’ll work less hours now – that works out well for my boss and me.

Here is my (long) post for today:

    Life’s a beach (um, sometimes).

    • Oh I’m glad to hear you can work fewer hours, that’s a good medium until you truly retire. After I retired from public service, having been able to also teach at the university for 5 years during that time, I was able to teach 15 units a year as a retired annuitant. Such a great additional 5 years to focus on teaching 40 years of skills to fresh-faced students. Once moved to WA, it was time to really retire and live off of our CalPers pensions.
I didn’t know that about your youth, that you traveled with family help. So glad for you. I never could, I got married young and had 2 kids. In fact my oldest daughter’s birthday is today. She’s 39! We’re on the road as i type this, working our way back home! Have a great week, Linda!

      • U was lucky to travel so much when I was younger and my parents did indulge me, so I was fortunate for that. I hope this is the right decision. As to retirement, after 23 years I wasn’t sure the replacement was going to work out plus we had this transition to a new place, so I’ll hang in here a little longer and enjoy that extra day off. Safe travels to you Terri and a belated happy birthday to your daughter.

But there were films to be seen (Ferrari, One Life and Poor Things, all to be recommended but especially the latter two), meals out and friends to catch up with. We went to an exhibition (Accidentally Wes Anderson, disappointingly nothing to do with one of our favourite film directors), a football match (an away win for Newcastle against Fulham in the FA Cup) and to a fun cooking class day with the team that work for ‘our’ charity, Plan Zheroes. Living in London means that there is always ‘something to do’. […]

I like the Lumix point and shoot but it’s quite old now and has developed some sort of smudge inside the lens which I can’t get at to clean! It only shows on photos with plain areas, e.g. sky, that coincide with where the smudge is, and I can edit it out, but it’s annoying. I’ll buy a replacement point and shoot but I want to stick to the Lumix as it’s the only one I’ve found with a decent viewfinder, and at the moment they seem to be out of stock everywhere. I suspect a new model is on the horizon!

  27. Blogging is very much a hobby for me, Terri. I enjoy doing it, it’s fun, entertaining, and I don’t mind spending my time doing it. When it becomes a chore, or feels like a job, or I start feeling stressed or guilty about it, that’s when it no longer is a hobby. For me, hobbies are something we do for enjoyment and fun.

I can understand those who blog for a living saying it’s not a hobby, even if they enjoy doing it. They’re more likely to get stressed by blogging, as many of us do when we worked or are still working.

I’m so lucky I am retired, yet I have no idea where all my time goes. But I’m never board and am never looking for something to do.

Life isn’t only for working, it’s for having fun, too. And your photos show how much fun you have.

Keep on enjoying your hobbies and enjoy life.
