The Flower Hour #14: A Friendly Amaryllis

Last week, when I visited my neighbor, she shared that her amaryllis had just bloomed.

Isn’t this a beauty? What is your experience of either seeing or growing one?

For the Flower Hour, share your images of flowers, gardens, fields of flowers, seasonal leaves and plants, cacti, blossoms, berries, and wildflowers. Bouquets and silk/faux flowers are welcome.

There are no specific themes for the Flower Hour, but please use your own photography. And you have all week to link to this post.

New to The Flower Hour photo challenge? Please check out my page for more information! I encourage “double-dipping” with other blog challenges if you do not want to create a separate post.

  2. A beautiful flower, Terri. I haven’t ever grown one. I should check if it’s easy to grow in this part of the world.

    1. They are a bit tricky to grow I’m told. I ordered fake ones, that should tell you something… 😆

  4. Beautiful Amaryllis, Terri. Your thoughts put me in mind of something I heard long ago: Our vegetable gardens are for the body. Our flowers are for the soul.

    1. I’m glad to have seen it and got a nice pic of it, Graham. I’ll have to remember to buy one later this year and save the bulb.

  9. I buy an Amaryllis every fall and watch it bloom near Christmas. I love the wax bulb ones, as all you do is place it on a shelf and watch it bloom a few weeks later! Mine is going to rebloom again. That’s a first for me. I buy mine on Amazon. They are great Christmas gifts!
    Happy Flower Hour Day!

  10. I am more into seeing flowers than growing them. I like vegetables and fruits more to plant. Beautiful amaryllis, Terri!

  11. So pretty. I had my first amaryllis this year. It was so fun to watch it bloom. My daughter got me it and it’s the big bulb wrapped in red wax…so interesting.

    1. I’ve heard they come wrapped in wax, but can be regrown again, Kirstin! They do bloom quickly. My neighbor’s amaryllis added 2 new blooms in a week.

  12. That is a beautiful plant – wow! Someone gave my mom an Amaryllis for Christmas. We’d never had one before and I followed the directions for it, but it took forever to sprout, let alone bloom, but in the process it grew like a beanstalk. Sadly, my mom had passed away and didn’t get to see her Amaryllis bloom. It only bloomed this one time, never again. I took a photo of it back in 2010 and used it in a blog post in 2014.

    1. It’s gorgeous, I was glad to capture a pic of my neighbor’s. I’ve read they’re touchy but I’m going to look into getting one. The growth pattern of the one in your picture is very cool!

      1. It was pretty, but not as vibrant as your neighbor’s. I hope you get one Terri and, since you’re already familiar with bulbs, perhaps you can get it to bloom yearly. This Amaryllis was like a beanstalk. I put it on the counter for the picture, but as it kept reaching toward the ceiling, I had to finally prop it up against a cupboard so it did not fall over and break.

    1. Thank you, Suzette! I went over to my friend’s home this morning and the plant has 6 blooms! My other neighbor had several of these blooming in her yard last May! There is hope! In the meantime, I ordered a fake amaryllis plant to display 😉

  27. What a lovely, inviting post 🌺 The amaryllis truly is a showstopper—bold, elegant, and full of quiet drama. I love how you weave personal connection, beauty, and community into one space, encouraging others to pause and notice the colors life offers. The Flower Hour feels less like a challenge and more like a shared celebration of nature, creativity, and friendship. A gentle reminder that flowers, much like people, brighten our worlds simply by being themselves.
