Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge #White: Life Inside a Snow Globe

Welcome to the first monthly color challenge of 2022. With only so many colors from which to choose, there will always be repeats. We looked at the color white last February 2021.

Without resorting to black and white photography, show us the color white.

Like my post title suggests, I feel like I’m living inside a snow globe. (image provided by pexels)

Inside I’ve changed my Christmas decor to the theme of winter white. Not too much, lest it gets a tad boring readers!

Looking out, looking in; an icicle’s perspective

The world outside my window is white as it is full-on winter here in the Pacific-Inland Northwest. La Nina has gifted many of us with a lot more severe weather than we bargained for this year. Without boring you with a weather report, I’ll let the images do the talking in the shape of a snowglobe.

Within the snow globe are the concentric rings of my life—my household, my neighbors, and recently people I see at the schools when I sub as a teacher—which are all connected by perhaps being trapped in the winter snow globe, but at the same time, we can connect physically and manage to socialize.

As Marsha suggests in her WQW post, socializing and communicating within the educational system is the lifeblood of learning.

Currently, I can connect with the school kids and personnel face-to-face which really gives me the sense of community and a slight shattering of the glass globe that temporarily binds us. It’s amazing to watch the kids get ready to go to lunch or recess as they are given 5 minutes to grab their snow boots and snow clothes and bustle out the door as if nothing is different in their winter white world. Hard for this former California girl to reckon with.

Our school district is in a rural county and there are no plans yet (fingers crossed) to close and go back to remote learning. Other nearby districts have paused sports due to lack of covid tests and many are suggesting temporary remote learning. Please, God, no. And that’s all I will say about that now.

A couple of interesting white objects to satisfy Lens-Artists: Interesting Objects. It’s not often you see a stand-up paddleboard in the bedroom. The white gate welcomes visitors to San Diego’s Del Mar Fair exhibit hall.

This was a rare, pink sunset to punctuate all the white and ended up being “last on the card” last week, as well as an entry to showcase a “weekend sky.”

  2. I wouldn’t say no to living inside a snow globe at the moment, Terri, instead of this wet weather we seem to get every winter. Very muddy too. Not pleasant.

  13. Wonderful winter white photos, Terri. My favorite shot isn’t a wintery one, but that snowy egret is stunning. I love the wispy blowing “hair” feathers. I hope your school stays open. The kids need face-to-face schooling so desperately. Ours just shut down again. I feel like my grandson has lost two full years. Stay warm and cozy and enjoy the beauty of winter.

    • Oh no, Diana, that is terrible news to read about your grandson’s school closing! I’m already scheduled to sub two days this coming week, so I’m thankful to help in any way. Thank you for your lovely compliment of the egret. That was one of my first great shots with my new camera. I can’t wait to get out this spring to some of the bird sanctuaries and get some more shots. As long as the roads are drivable, winter seems a little more beautiful 🙂

      • Our town is flooded with covid, Terri. About 20% of the population is sick… (and they still won’t wear masks). So many teachers are sick that they couldn’t cover the classes with subs, and they had to close. It’s crazy. But this too shall pass.

      • My goodness 😳, Diana. We’re seeing this in Spokane but we’re up in Steven’s County so not as much. Northern Idaho is in your situation but sources feel like the peak is near. Glad you’re staying healthy!

I’m glad I didn’t resort to using any black and white images in my post, as I too wanted to concentrate on the white! I can assure you our warm summer sunshine and blue skies have been a treat in between storms and wild weather thanks to La Nina.   22. You have got some serious snow there. We are now in Florida so no snow here. But at home it has been extremely cold. Tomorrow in person classes start again when the schools open again after yet another Covid lockdown!! Our daughter sent us a photo of our Grandson who was dressed to go out for recess as a break in his home schooling for Grade 2. He has on a wool cap and on top of that a snowsuit with a hood and a rim of fake fur around his face, and serious mitts on his hands. He is smiling but you can hardly see his face. It was minus 9 Celsius (15 F) outside! But he’s a Canadian so he was ok with it.

  26. Hi snow glober. What a beautiful bird, your wind-blown Snowy Egret. I love your wedding pictures, too. You both look so happy. I will have to see what I can do to digitize a picture of Vince and me at our wedding. He looked so handsome but he wore Mafia black. Are you getting tired of the snow yet? We haven’t had nearly as much as we did last year. I am loving all the sunshine this year. Snow is beautiful but oh so cold if you’re not in your snow globe. Have a great week. Talk to you soon. 🙂

    • Thank you Marsha! Glad you enjoyed the warm egret and wedding shots! It has been cold here but our roads are mostly clear so we can drive in and out of the snow globe LOL! I could use some sun…it’s there but above the fog–remember that central valley fog? Uggh! I thought I moved away from that, oh well. The expanses of white snow does brighten everything well and gives the illusion of sunshine. I haven’t forgotten about the fitness quotes! Talk soon!

      • Sounds good. I went through pictures yesterday to pick out some good white ones. Fitness is Wednesday – already. But I am going to post about it several times throughout the year.

  33. Oh my goodness Terri – your post is a perfect example of why we moved south!! Our previous home was high in the mountains (such as they were) in northern NJ. There was a ski resort about 30 minutes from our home. We got some very large snow storms there even tho down below they got nothing. I was never a fan of cold and the older I get the worse it is!! I’ll take sweltering summers any day LOL. Loved looking at the snowy images through YOUR lens

    • Lol, Tina, believe me, I get it about wanting to be warm. Our new home keeps us warm unlike our former home, which was drafty. As cold and snowy as it is here, I expect it and can get out of the cold quickly. Sacramento summers were just too hot after 40 years and I do love 4 seasons. This was a colder winter than normal and last summer was hotter than normal. Tell ya what, when we need more warmth, we’ll come out your way some day 😁

  54. Your snowglobe pictures are beautiful, Terri. They keep the lovely feelings of Christmas just gone alive. When I lived in London, just one snowflake falling would bring the whole city to a standstill.

    Those icicles look rather lethal. I remember my father always knocking them down with a garden brush when we used to have a lot of snowfalls in the winter months. Global warming means the brush hasn’t been used for that job for many years.

    I hope you’re managing to stay warm during the winter weather, although I hope you’re also enjoying your winter wonderland.

    • Thank you, Hugh! The snow covered landscape is quite beautiful although it seems to attract the low fog over the last weeks. Slow to melt, too. One of those icicles had to be three feet long and close to 2 inches in diameter–lethal indeed. They are long gone now that we are in the upper 30sF for now. If we get some sunshine, it is easier to enjoy the winters here. I heard it hasn’t snowed like this since 2008. We got it all in 2021–weather-wise!

  66. Wow!
    Would you believe me if I told you that I have never seen snowfall or experienced below freezing temperatures in my life?
    This palette of white is certainly one of a kind for me and I’m glad you included couple of warmer whites as well.
    And I think it would be good to share a blue winter sky for my next Weekend Sky post. What do you say?
