Sunday Stills: Always Be My Baby

Perplexed Freshly Fledged Phoebes

This week’s theme is about babies. Any kind of baby is welcomed if you are participating in the photo challenge. In this post you will see baby humans, baby birds and animals and even baby trees!

Babies of the Animal Kingdom

Besides the cute Say’s Phoebe fledglings that joined us on May 12, here are a couple of cute photos from around our neighborhood in 2025.

I couldn’t resist adding these playful Dachshund puppies that lived across the street from us last year.

The pup on the right below was born with several recessive genes that rendered him both blind and deaf. You can see the blue merle (gray-black) marking above his eye. Blue merle coloring in dogs is a recessive gene as well. His other eye is an empty socket. This did not stop him from playing with his sister, which took a lot of courage! His sense of smell was incredible and you wouldn’t suspect he was blind and deaf if you didn’t know.

Alas, Our (Fur) Babies Leave Us

If you have ever loved a dog, you know the heartbreak of saying goodbye when the time comes. Brodie is our current lovebug, but we loved his fur-buddies who have left us. Sadly, Woody, who was the litter mate of my little Aero, and brother of Gideon, went to Heaven this week.

Woody was the last of the brothers. he would have been 16 in July. Woody, may your sweet spirit run free with Aero and Gideon, and the other sweet dogs that preceded you!

Celebrating

Last Thursday, my nephew, Cody, all grown up, graduated from the US Air Force Basic Training. Family members made the trip from California and Arizona to watch the graduation at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. We are all so proud of this young man who graduated from high school in 2025. His proud father is on the right. In white is my step-mom!

And Remembering…

Cody’s Grandpa (“Papa”), my Dad, would also have been proud. He’s saying, “This one’s for you!”

This time last year, we celebrated the life of my father with a memorial service in Arizona.

This is an old family photo of me as a baby held by my cute brunette mom (front row), and my tall, proud dad in the back row. Far left is another baby, my cousin, also born in December 1959.

  1. What sweet photos of animal babies! The Phoebes look like they’re so confused about what to do next, but I’m sure they figured it out quickly! How amazing that the deaf and blind puppy is managing so well. I loved your tribute to Cody and to your dad. Thanks for the meaningful and though-provoking quotes and for sharing with Wednesday Quotes this week!

    1. Thank you, Kym! We both had the ideas to remember those who served and about to serve. I knew Cody as a baby but didn’t have any baby pics of him. Those Phoebe babies seem to be on their own already (as God intended) while mama is already sitting on another set of eggs! Enjoy your weekend!

  4. What a lovely post, Terri. You are always so great at remembering everyone. I love the old family photo. I’m about out of baby pictures. Lightroom isn’t working, although it did reload May’s photos, I just couldn’t find them. The rest of them have left the catalog. I’ll have to find them later. 🙂

Those dachshund puppies touched me. Thanks for sharing. Thanks also for your tribute to our military personnel. As a veteran of 24 years, Memorial Day is always special. I had some friends in Viet Nam who didn’t make it home. Have a lovely holiday weekend. Joe

  13. Those puppies are adorable, Terri. The photo takes me back to the day we first met Toby and his four brothers and one sister. I would have taken all the puppies, but sadly, all but two had already been sold.

I love old family photos. I’ve got lots of them, especially like the one you have in this post. Sadly, I should have found out who most of the people in the photos were before those in them left us. Seeing old black-and-white photos always takes me back to the days when I had to wait weeks to get photos back from the developers.

It’s a bank holiday weekend here in the UK, too. The next one isn’t until the last Monday in August. So, happy Summer, Terri.

  18. Terri, what a cute picture of the freshly fledged Phoebes! They have such a look of wonderment, like “cool, we’re on the outside now, so where do we go first? You are lucky you get to follow them so closely, from egg to fledging. How nice you got all four dogs to post so nicely and I remember Brodie guarding the house from the deer as I really liked it. I like your family photos as well. It’s good to remember the real meaning of the holiday. My post today will stray from nature as I meandered around a very old graveyard. I’ve visited here before about five years ago but this time with the flags in place for Memorial Day on some of the military persons who love their lives in the Civil War. I will have a cutie pie and flowers to contribute for the Flower Hour coming for Wordless Wednesday.

    1. Thank you, Linda! While we’re enjoying the bird show, a young bull moose swaggered through the neighborhood this evening! My neighbor got video and I managed a couple with my good camera! Never a dull moment here! Sad and inevitable to lose our furbabies. Thank goodness for endless photos!

      1. Terri, I would love to see a young bull moose or an old bull moose in the neighborhood – that would make my day. I hope your shots and neighbor’s video came out well. I’m reluctant to get any pets as I live alone and have no family, so heartbreaking on many levels. I am glad for my photos of my pets over the years. [I was responding to your comment and WP flipped out and showed I was all caught up in Notifications, so I came over to Reader to respond here. Hmm.]

    1. Thank you, Graham! That sweet little dachshund was amazing! Once he smelled me, a day later, I went outside to the front yard, and he was outside playing with the little boy. Suddenly, the puppy stopped and looked straight at me and started to cross our (unbusy) street. I ran over and distracted him, Their adaptations are remarkable. I’m reading a book titled “An Immense World” by Ed Yong. Absolutely incredible how members of the animal kingdom use their various senses. Watching the puppy reminded me of how incredible a dog’s sense of smell is!
