The Flower Hour #32: Going to the Dog-Woods

Partially inspired by Egidio’s “Stuck in Place” theme for Lens-Artists Challenge this week, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to show off our local blooming Dogwood Trees that we enjoyed in mid-May, here in Northeastern Washington.

We don’t have to travel more than a few hundred yards to see several Dogwood trees in our neighborhood. We have one in our yard, a small one only 5 years old. It didn’t yield many blooms this year.

However, in just a few steps down the street to my neighbor’s house there is a Dogwood tree that is more mature and always puts on a great show.

During my quest to see Dogwood tree blooms, I came across this:

The Legend of the Dogwood Tree

I created this graphic, but summarized the words from a variety of online sources. There is no one source for this legend. I grew very emotional over its meaning.

      1. We do have dogwood out here in the Dakotas, but not the flowering dogwood trees you get in Washington. Ours are mostly Redosier Dogwood — hardy shrubs with bright red stems. Beautiful in winter, but definitely not the same species you’re seeing in your photos.

  19. I cant get enough of blossoming trees, and can’t decide on a favorite! I do love dogwoods, especially the variety you photographed with those big vibrant pink petals. A couple weeks ago I took a photo of a small bud on a tree but wasn’t sure what kind it was – looks like it was a dogwood and I didn’t recognize it!

  20. Terri, I’ve never heard of the Legend of the Dogwood Tree – yes, it is inspirational and also sad. The pinks in your photos are so vibrant. The Dogwood Tree has beautiful blooms – your neighbor’s tree is exquisite as is yours, on a much-smaller scale. As mentioned last night, I will link my Two Spring Beauties to your post tomorrow.

    1. I love learning interesting information as a result of blogging, Linda! Our little tree sported 4 blooms and I missed their peak. But the tree is doing very well. It’s had a couple of bad times when we under-watered it but it’s bounced back. Look forward to your post!

      1. I have learned a lot through blogging too Terri! That’s good your tree has rallied back – they are beautiful trees. I hope it doesn’t disappoint. A fellow blogger and I were chatting about Spring Beauties once and I saw some so I took a few photos of it with a squirrel eager to be in the photo. Spring Beauties don’t last long and they only grow around the trunks of the trees.
