Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Splendid Shades of #Green

Welcome back to the Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge! March seems to embody the color green, as we prepare to celebrate St Patrick’s Day this week and officially welcome the spring (vernal) equinox. I also admit that green is my favorite color.

Sources agree that green is the most prominent color associated with March, when the northern hemisphere experiences the season of spring. Green is the color of new life and growth.

Let’s look at some different shades of green, shall we? I chose my versions of the various shades of green with my interpretations of each color.

“For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring there is a different green.” – J. R. R. Tolkien

Evergreen and Forest Green

Evergreen sports dark shades of green found in forests and nature.

Kelly Green and Emerald Green

These are the most authentic colors of green most associated with St Patrick’s Day.

Nine Mile Falls, for which our rural town is named, really boasts these emerald waters!

Partially inspired by Ritva’s portraits for this week’s Lens-Artists challenge, I added this self-portrait of me with a falconer and falcon, dressed in green garb for a local renaissance fair a few years ago.

To commemorate the popularity of the movie Wicked, which is currently in theaters and streaming, I couldn’t help but think of Elphaba’s green skin. I first saw the Broadway musical in San Francisco with my daughters in 2009. I had previously read the book by Gregory Maguire (based on L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz series). Trust me when I say the book is WAY darker than the musical. I still loved the experience. And the movie, which is released in two parts, is breathtaking!

My husband and I saw the musical in Spokane in 2022. Spokane loves its downtown and celebrated its Best of Broadway series by lighting the Pavilion in green.

  1. My favourite shade of green is Forest Green, Terri. Why? Because it reminds me of Christmas. I’ve gone rather mad for it, especially when I see a forest green polo shirt or t’shirt. I’ve even got forest green socks.

I first saw Wicked on Broadway after we queued up for cancellation tickets. We got terrific seats and fell in love with the show. When it came to London, we saw it over seven times. It’s still paying there. But dare I say that I’ve not seen the movie…yet? I’ve heard all about it and how excellent it is. It’s streaming now, but I’ve been told it’s best viewed on the big screen in the cinema.

    • I’m in both green and wicked camps with you, Hugh! I love those dark green, almost black Douglas firs found in Portland, Oregon. Their state tree. And Wicked? You HAVE to see the movie! We saw it in the theater on New Years Day in Scottsdale. But then I bought the movie on Prime Video…equally great on our 65″ TV!

      • Thanks for the thumbs-up on watching Wicked on a large-screen TV, Terri. We’ve just updated our TV to 65″, too. And it comes with a soundbar that makes you think you’re in the cinema. We watched Gladiator II on it on Valentine’s Day. Yeah, I know, it’s not a Valentine’s movie, but we were impressed with everything.

It looks like I don’t need that trip to the cinema now. All I need to do is order popcorn in.

  2. What a great way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with this post, Terri. We’re still another month away before things start greening up in my area of Canada. Your post captured so many different shades of green. Boy, those green Northern Lights are so spectacular. 💚

  4. Terri,

Fabulous pictures! The Mulberry shot has an artistic flair to it and drew me in. You look very cute in your green costume. Of course, the green beer picture is my favorite! Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Enjoy your week!

  5. Fabulous green’s Terri. That clover picture with all the rain is magnificent especially next to the green lights! I love the vase, too. How perfect in the window. I’ve got to search for green this month. Most of my pictures are white, unless I get some Cali pictures in the next two days. 🙂

    • Thank you, Marsha 💚 I can’t believe I caught the clover shot with an older phone. I picked up some glass vases at an antique store years ago and that was one. I hope you can find some green or at least the pot o’ gold at the end of a rainbow! ☘️

  6. Dear Terri
Thank you very much for this great presentation of the different shades of green. I like how you choose the different greens.
I just did another book about colours and had to choose the different shades of all the primary and secondary colours. It’s amazing how many shades one can find.
I wish you a happy week

  7. I love all the shades of green that you shared today. You really did an awesome job meeting all the challenges. Well done!
I enjoyed the scenic shots especially the waterfalls.

  8. So many beautiful green images Terri, that it’s difficult for me to pick a favorite. The majestic evergreens would give me cause to pause as would the view of Yosemite Falls that Hans is enjoying. From the tiniest beings, your hummingbirds, to the larger images of your town, I can see why green is your favorite color.

Green means rebirth to me, especially after Winter and finally, the blah landscape comes alive again … it’s not happening here yet, despite a few very warm days, but with a possible wintry mix tonight, Spring seems to be a lot longer than just four days away.

Here is my post, written about a walk taken last May on a day that was resplendent in green – new leaves, new growth on evergreen and lush grass.

There’s no green to be seen!

    • Thank you, Janis! Spring gets closer every day! Wicked, the novel, is very dark. The musical made some adjustments but both are exceptional! Search in YouTube for Idina Menzel and Christin Chenoweth, “For Good,” and “Defying Gravity!” The songs are truly amazing.

  9. What a beautiful post to read. I love the idea of this challenge and will try to join the next one! I also love your J. R. R. Tolkien quote at the beginning. Green is definitely one of my favorite colors. I feel a connection to it and spring is by far my favorite season. Have a great day!

  10. A wonderful spectrum of green, Terri! I forgot tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day when I did my post. Your outfit at the renaissance fair is cute. It made me think of going to the Oregon Renaissance Fair. They have different themes for the 4 weekends in June. The theme of faeries is in the first weekend and we’ll be on our way to Italy.

  11. Green is one of my favourite colours. A great selection here. There is also avocado green. Remember in the 60s and 70s, avocado coloured appliances! What were we thinking? I love your outfit for the renaissance fair.

  12. I love your selection of greens, Terri. The scenic shots are stunning. I enjoyed the stage version of Wicked, a few years ago now and I’m looking forward to watching the film adaptation. Hope your week is a good one!

    • LOL, thank you, Anne! I’m very attracted to green in nature if you couldn’t tell. The green portraits worked well with Lens-Artists. I’d already had the two Wicked images in the post before I saw Ritva’s theme, but added the ren faire picture. That was taken years ago at the Folsom Renaissance Faire.
