Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: #Leather and Shades of Brown

In September, I had the pleasure of driving to Portland, Oregon to meet up with Marsha of Always Write where we spent 6 days there together then another three in Spokane, WA. A memorable trip indeed!

Not only did we have a great time exploring areas of Portland and the Oregon Coast, but we also drove north to Vancouver, Washington to meet with Kirstin of Loving Life. Kirstin is a loyal photo challenge participant and all three of us snapped away armed with our mental list of upcoming photo challenges.

We found some great examples for this month’s color challenge: leather, or shades of brown.

I love the color brown and all its shades.

Marsha said this was her favorite photo of leather–because I said it was compelling (our continuing photo op joke).

In case you are wondering about the featured image, it was taken at Fort Vancouver. The pelt belonged to a black bear.

As we strolled the grounds of the Fort Vancouver historical site, there was literally leather and beautiful textures everywhere.

Last weekend I traveled to the Sacramento area to attend my former Mother-In-Law’s funeral. I always loved the rich brown tones of this church’s interior. I married my first husband in this church over 40 years ago, so it felt slightly odd to be back in this church again with his family. It was nice to see his side of the family again, and of course, my own Webster side as we said a final goodbye to my MIL.

Western larch is found primarily in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, as well as British Columbia. Indulge me as I share one more Western Larch.

While walking around my neighborhood, I see plenty of homes sporting shades of brown.

And I am mostly done painting my eagle/bear totem pole. By spring it will be displayed outside in our backyard.

  3. It’s surprising how much brown hues there are around when you’re looking for it. Great selection, Terri and I love your totem pole. I hope your mother-in-law’s funeral went as well as possible.

I too am a big fan of all things brown so especially enjoyed your post this week.Your Totem pole is looking fabulous and it’d been great watching it from the start.   15. I like brown too, Terri. Living in a log home in the woods, our theme is brown. Lol. It’s a color that goes with everything! Your totem looks great, too. I’m looking forward to seeing it in your backyard some spring. And those yellow larches! Brilliant.

  23. This was a great selection of browns Terri and I was surprised to find so many browns in my photos especially when I went looking. That’s what I like about challenges like these, it makes me think, gets me out of my own particular rut and keeps me curiously looking at the world around me. I also learn things from others and see the world from their perspective which opens my mind as a result. In other words, it makes me think!! Thanks so much for all you do. Your variety of browns were interesting and informative.

    • Thank you, Debbie, I’m glad you enjoyed my touches of brown and that the challenge actually challenges you–it does me too! It was nice for me to snap pics in other areas like Oregon and SW Washington for a change. I wish you a pleasant week ahead!

  25. OOOh lala. Your totem is almost finished! It looks great! You did a fabulous job on it. I have no idea how you found time to paint it, write articles, do your blog and all the millions of other things you do! I love seeing all the leather colors especially little Aero. I’m working on my response to PPAC and SS right now as I stand at my new standing desk in the kitchen at Cindy’s. When I get tired I can put the desk down, and sit in my normal couch potato position. Fun post and fun memories – even the stressful driving in Portland. If I had been driving, you could have experienced my stress level, which might have included tears. 🙂

    When I think brown, I think “earth tones.” How about a picture of Yellowstone Falls surrounded by brown earth? P.S. I couldn’t wear brown with my red hair either. Always went with blue. Have a great week! Joe

  38. The more challenges you take part in, the more people there are to visit, Terri. You do a great job in keeping up. I’m quite fond of chocolate browns and camel- or maybe caramel- colours, and the larches are stunning. Are there other totems where you live, or do you plan to be the first? It’s beautiful.

  42. I love the colour brown too, Terri, and at this time of the year, we are surrounded by so many shades of brown.

    Your Totem Pole is amazing. Am I right in thinking it has wings? It’ll make a spectacular display come spring. The winter months will give you plenty of inside time to finish painting it. I hope it’s heavy enough not to disappear from your front porch mysteriously. Did it come as a kit, or did you buy it like that?

    • Brown is a surprisingly nice color but sorely taken for granted. I bought the 6 ft tall totem unfinished at a rustic furniture store in Idaho. I treated the naturally occurring cracks with polypropylene spray then did all the painting. I have some detail to add to the wings still. Thank you for asking, Hugh. We spend our time in our backyard so the pole will stay in the backyard so I can see it. I’ll see you on Wednesday. I’m excited to be with family this week to celebrate Thanksgiving. 🤎🍗

  44. Glorious browns! Indeed it should be more loved than it is. I have always loved brown – in all hues and shades. But – green is my favourite. Loved so much the larch trees, their yellow goodbyes are breathtakingly beautiful.

  49. Brown has always been my favorite color too Terri. The rich warm tones and there are so many shades of brown. Years ago, I had a brown leather skirt and vest. It may sound like a cowgirl outfit, but it was just the most buttery-soft leather and I can picture wearing it with a pumpkin-colored shirt. I loved this quote as well: “Brown is the color of Mother Earth.” ~Suzy Chiazzari

    It sounds like a wonderful trip you had. You had so many photos here – all of them enjoyable to scroll through, image after image and I wondered about, but did not guess, it was a bear pelt in the featured image.

    I like that eagle photo – what a great closeup of the eagle feasting.

    You sure are making progress on that totem pole.

  53. […] Biasini has had his winter coat clipped. Horses grow in a thicker winter coat but if they are in work and training then they sweat and it is hard to get them dried off enough to put on their blankets for the nighttime. Biasini’s legs have not been clipped and will keep his legs warmer until we get to Florida where Super Groom Lexi will give him a second clip. He also has a patch on his side to give him some protection from riders ankles and spurs that are used to give aids .
