On the Edge of Unusual

Today I am catching up with my own Sunday Stills photo challenge. I missed the first two weeks in June due to travel and foot surgery, while Hugh graciously hosted.

If you recall, the first two June themes were “edge” and “unusual.”

I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little about the beginning of June as I offer my interpretations of edge and unusual for Sunday Stills.

The first weekend in June, on the edge of my foot surgery, scheduled for June 4th, I traveled to San Diego to celebrate my youngest brother’s 50th birthday.

The day before the party, my daughter and I had lunch at the Bali Hai restaurant in San Diego’s Shelter Island. The last time I was here I was 4 years old attending my great-grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary.

During the entire weekend, my thoughts and subsequent anxiety drifted toward my pending surgery in a few days. My daughter captured this rare moment of contentment as I enjoyed the ambiance and adult beverage.

After my brother’s birthday celebration, he hosted a small after-party at a nearby hotel in the San Diego harbor. After scurrying around with my daughters and their boyfriends, we found a place to park.

We stopped a moment to take a few pictures and I caught this unusual sight with my cell phone of a dark figure fishing off the edge of the jetty framed against the San Diego night-time skyline. Unusual because it was nearly 10:00 pm, but even more so when the fisherman walked by me and took off HER hoodie!

Once back home from San Diego, I enjoyed a quiet Monday, slightly on edge as I contemplated the next day’s surgery. As I settled on my sofa with my coffee, I caught this sight of water vapor streaming off our fence in the backyard. The morning sun caught everything just right. Rather unusual.

To say the least, June has proven to be an unusual month that has kept me on the edge.

Join me this Sunday for June’s final theme, the Great Outdoors!

  1. Aren’t you glad all the anxiety is behind you. It is dreadful how we all worry about things in advance of their happening. The picture of the girl fishing is most striking.

  2. The fisher and vapor photos are truly unusual. You have a good eye for seeing the unexpected but a quick hand for being able to capture the images.

    1. Thank you again, Shari, you must be playing catch up! Maybe you were off on your own adventure? “Luck” is the middle name of most photographers 🙂

      1. I’m taking a bit of a break from blogging, concentrating on getting my novel ready to send to potential agents or to self pub.

  4. I would have been totally on edge awaiting surgery, Terri. So happy that is behind you and you are now on the road to recovery. Love your unusual photos – great shots and not something you see every day for sure.

    1. Thanks, Molly! As a nurse you probably saw of lot of post-surgical patients who didn’t follow doctor’s orders. I am being a good girl!

  6. My brother loves in San Diego–on Coronado. I don’t get down there often enough to visit. Well, he is mad at me. That’s probably part of it. Sigh.

    1. Thank you, Donna. A few more weeks to go and not a lot of photo ops these days, unless you like garden and flower macros 😊

  8. I like the nighttime shot. Very moody. I should try more of that sort of thing, instead of being lazy and curled up on the couch.

    1. Thanks, Graham, not bad for a phone, still quite a bit of noise, but it added to the mood.

  9. Glad your surgery is behind you and recovery is coming along. That black and white or monochrome photo is just dazzling. I like the contrast between nature and the cityscape with all of its bright lights and razzle dazzle. Terrific photo. And what an unusual sight…the steam or vapor coming off the fence. Crazy! Until I read your description, I thought someone was grilling on the other side of the fence.

    1. Thank you, Leslie! I had to look twice at my steamy fence, too! It was over in just a few moments 🙂
