Sunday Stills Animal of the Month: Antlers, Horns and Hooves

Welcome back to another episode of Animal of the Month! This month we focus on animals with antlers, horns and hooves.

Autumn in the northern hemisphere finds our wild antlered and hooved animal friends looking for mates and making their presence known throughout the neighborhood in rural Northeastern Washington.

“If you live in harmony with nature you will never be poor; if you live according to what others think, you will never be rich.” – Seneca

Between the moose, deer, and even the random farm animals that live close by, we see hooves, antlers and horns on a daily basis. We enjoy living in harmony with our animal “friends.”

Although we rarely see elk in our area, I’ve heard them in the autumn, calling for a mate with their distinct, eerie bugle. The sound is kind of spine-tingling in the middle of the night.

I saw this bull elk walking nonchalantly by my Dad’s old home in Payson, Arizona!

A good-sized herd of mule deer walk right by our property almost every evening in the winter, spring and fall. They can gracefully hop over a 6 foot perimeter fence, but they can’t get into our garden or destroy our young trees with those antlers.

Domestic Hooves and Horns

I never expected domestic and farm animals to live so close. Just four properties down our street, my neighbor has three horses. Grier, the Norwegian Fjord horse is all but grown up now.

My other neighbor to our west had three adorable, friendly goats on their 5-acre property. Both male and female goats have horns.

We finally attended the Spokane Interstate (County) Fair for the first time since we moved here. Like most county fairs, this one had a sizable series of animal barn areas where exhibits and competitions are held.

Book Wrangling

Speaking of wrangling, lately I’ve been wrangling something besides horses and backyard critters—books!

My good friend and fellow blogger Marsha Ingrao has a new book making its way into the world: The Quiet Power of Blogging: Why Blogging Still Matters in a TikTok World. I’m delighted to be a contributor, and Marsha will be sharing much more about the book during her formal launch soon.

The Quiet Power of Blogging is available now here: This is the link for the Kindle version. https://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Power-Blogging-Matters-TikTok-ebook/dp/B0HFW3WX9N/

All this on the heels of three bloggers—Miriam, Diana, and Marsha—encouraging me to write an illustrated children’s book about our Backyard Say’s Phoebes. Last August 2025, Marsha and I were in Portland and met up with Miriam and Diana for lunch. I was a bit intimidated being in the company of published authors as we chatted about book writing and publishing.

After reading one of my Phoebe posts, I recall one of them saying, “If you don’t write it, I will!”

OK! Gauntlet thrown!

While Marsha and I put our heads together on a strategy, I headed to the library to browse young children’s picture books for ideas. Because I already had thousands of bird photos, I was able to explore various AI tools to help illustrate my own images. Here I show Mama and Papa Phoebe talking about how fast their babies grew. This is my image with a reimagined watercolor-style background.

Who would-a thunk it? That a series of blog posts about watching these adorable birds build a nest under our patio cover three years in a row—and watching their family grow—could inspire a children’s book.

Now that is an example of the quiet power of blogging.

  2. Hearing an elk bugle in the middle of the night must be such an eerie, spine-tingling experience! Loved seeing the photo of the bull elk casually strolling down the street in Payson, and Grier the Fjord horse is absolutely gorgeous. Such a wonderful collection of horns and hooves, Terri!

  3. Nice selection Terri. I love those deer, but it must be a challenge keeping them out of your garden. How high is your fence? Also, good to see the young horse doing so well. Good luck with your book. Here’s mine this week: https://grahamsisland.com/2026/09/20/horns-and-hooves/

    1. Thanks so much, Graham! Our dog helps with the deer (and squirrels). The perimeter fence is only 4 feet tall. The garden fence is 5 feet but tight quarters. We enjoy seeing the horses.

  5. Great post Terri! I’ve never heard an Elk call. He’s probably saying that his rack is just too heavy!

    1. Thank you, Anne! I’d never heard the elk bugle until we moved here. I heard it late one night and thought it was a coyote. Very eerie!

  7. Those elk are so big. I can not imagine them strolling down the street.

    1. They are huge, with the rack almost 10 feet tall. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw them three years ago meandering down the street in my dad’s neighborhood! Payson, Arizona is home to a huge 100+ member elk herd. Kind of a normal thing to see!

  8. It’s so lovely to see animals we don’t see over here generally, like the impressive Bison. The book looks wonderful. A great selection of animals, Terri and an exciting trip to look forward to. Hope you have a fabulous time!

    1. Thank you, Cathy! The bison and elk are always a thrill to see. Moose, too, but luckily we see those here more often. I’m excited about the Phoebe book but a bit nervous about the whole publishing process. I’m glad Marsha is helping me! 2 weeks from today, we’ll be in Amsterdam! Super excited!

  9. Hi, Terri! 🙋

I smiled looking at all those antlers, horses, and deers; they really look very gorgeous! Also, I’m so happy to hear good news about the book. Sounds like an interesting book!

A release of new versions of my projects was underway when I had to push it back two weeks. I didn’t want to do this, but the Wi-Fi issues, which were fixed, caused this delay. ☺️

Have a very wonderful new week ahead, Terri! ☺️🌟

  10. Boy are you singing in harmony today, my friend. You had me at the elk mating cry. Then the deer in the snow. Whew! You are living in the wild. Then the baby Grier all grown up. How adorable is he? But then I see a giant picture of Nutter Butter on the cover of The Quiet Power of Blogging, with the best story of the Quiet Power ever told next in line. I keep hearing more and more reasons why the quiet power is still going strong, quiet and steady. These are fun times. I can’t wait for Mama Phoebe to tell the world about her summer home near Spokane, WA. 🙂 xxxxxxxx

    1. Thank you, Marsha! We enjoyed some fun birds in suburban Sacramento but here, there is always something new to see.

I’m super excited for your official launch and getting ready for the Phoebes to share their story.

    1. Thank you, Suzette! I stand in awe every day when I see these magnificent creatures, small or large! My stepmom used to send me pics of the elk randomly grazing in her front yard. Payson is a cute mountain town in Arizona, a place we considered moving to.
