Sunday Stills: Animal of the Month–Dog and Butterfly

To celebrate the dog days of summer and the plethora of summer insects likely vexing you, this week I challenge you to share images of insects. Spiders are OK, too, but they are arachnids with 8 legs. Add dogs too, if you wish!

My post title comes from the song, Dog and Butterfly, sung by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, one of my all-time favorite songs and bands. Listen while you scroll though the beautiful bugs 😊

The original image of Brodie sniffing the ice plant flower, was reimagined to add the butterfly. Hence “Dog and Butterfly.”

Butterflies and Moths

“Butterflies are like angels’ kisses sent from heaven.” —Malia Kirk

Moths

“Nature is always lavish of her gifts even to the most insignificant forms. The butterflies and moths are richly dowered in this respect.” – Annie Besant

Beetles

Some people are deathly afraid of beetles. This one could be a reason why.

Big, scary-looking, but harmless Root-Borer beetle

And then many are drawn to the tiny, pretty, ladybeetle (or ladybug). And why not, what’s not to love?

“Hurt no living thing: Ladybird, nor butterfly, nor moth with dusty wing…”
~ Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894)

Wings and Stingers

Dragonflies and bees that is! We know why bees exist as pollinators for our flora.

Wasps help pollinate as well as hunt caterpillars and flies. This tiny paper wasp is sipping water from a tiny ceramic flower in my garden.

Are you aware of how useful dragonflies are?

Isn’t it lovely how they love to “perch” on my garden posts? They fly back and forth to the same post over several days., likely hunting mosquitos.

“Dragonflies possess natural “superpowers” that make them earth’s most successful aerial hunters, boasting a hunting success rate of up to 95%. They can eat over 40 mosquitos a day.” SOURCE

“I love to see the sunshine on the wings of the Dragonflies… there is magic in it.”― Ama H. Vanniarachchy

I have shared this previously but it’s worth sharing again. Years ago at the Sacramento Delta, while hubby was out windsurfing, I sat in the shade out of the wind. Playing out over an hour behind me on a log, was this:

Dragonfly nymph sheds into adulthood
Molting Dragonfly from nymph to adult!
green dragonfly sheds larval husk
Little by little…

I watched, utterly amazed as it slowly and deftly emerged from its nymph shell. Note, this series of images was taken with my Lumix FZ300 camera.

A new adult emerges

Speaking of wings, sometimes a winged insect becomes lunch for a nest of hungry baby birds. This moth was good-sized compared to this small Say’s Phoebe flycatcher.

Papa Phoebe is shown here in an illustrative watercolor design I am using from my original photos for my children’s book. Talented self-publisher Marsha Ingrao is helping me as we get it ready for publication, hopefully by this Fall.

  1. Gorgeous close-ups and I love them all! I specially envy you the dragonflies…here they seem to never sit still – are they slower in your part of the world or do you give them sedatives…(!)?

  6. Loved the dragonfly part. They hang around me at home on my balcony and when I’m at the pool in Mexico. They land on me and one didn’t move for half an hour. They also bring messages from beyond. 🥰

  8. It’s been a summer of bees and butterflies this year where I live, Terri. We’ve never seen so many butterflies or bees, all busy pollinating. I think it helps with what we plant in our gardens or backyards, whether we see them or not. Our lavender plants especially have attracted both, as well as other insects. I think the long, hot, dry summer has helped them too, although I did help with putting out fresh water daily for all the wildlife. It was great watching the birds take turns bathing.

And the ladybirds seem to enjoy sleeping in our window frames, where they have been since last winter. It must have been cosy in there.

    1. I’m glad the pollinators were kept busy and how nice you have water available for birds and bees, Hugh! I’ll bet it was fun to see so many butterflies too! We’re already noticing the beginning of bird migration as they all start heading south.

  10. So many gorgeous images, Terri! I love the picture of Brodie, and the Pink Lady Butterfly! The beetle – great picture – but I squirm when I see beetles! Something about being afraid of the crunch that would occur if I were to accidentally step on one! If I find some insects this week, I’ll be back. 🙂

  22. What a great selection of creatures you have here Terri … oops, Brodie is a beloved pet, not a creature, with his butterfly encounter. 🙂 I just learned about how valuable dragonflies were in the last week from a site I follow that gives tidbits about nature – I never knew that before. The dragonfly molting was incredible. When we have had cicadas emerging, more so than the usual cicadas in the Summertime, they’d shed their shells and I’d find them hanging on rosebush thorns. Pretty smart of them to use the thorns to help them shed the exoskeleton. I’m not so fond of spiders either, unless we are separated by a few paces.

I will have critters tonight, some geese and fishflies. Fishflies are difficult to photograph when they sit on you. I flick them away … those insects I can handle. I’ll have another critter post for Wordless Wednesday this week.

  24. What a wonderful post, Terri. My heart skipped a beat as I went through the pictures. The picture of Brody with the butterfly could make a beautiful cover for a children’s book. And that painterly style dragon fly made me want to paint it. I loved the light on the dragon fly’s wings and how you captured it coming out of its shell (that was something out of Animal Planet or Discovery Channel). It could win an award. Thank you for sharing the beauty of the natural world captured through your lens. You made even moths look gorgeous. I haven’t seen any of the three you shared. I’ll see what I’ve got in my albums (poetry on insects, too 🙂 )
