Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Exploring (EVER)GREEN and Wonder In the Great Outdoors

This month, I’m celebrating “June is Great Outdoors Month.”

“Along this earthen wonderland my heart falls in green love; as I gaze awestruck to the trees sharing grace from above.” – Angie Weiland-Crosby

Getting outdoors during June should be easy for us who live in the Northern Hemisphere. However, for my southern hemisphere friends who are enjoying winter, I know you have many ways to enjoy the outdoors this time of year, such as getting away to warm places or, for those who love the cold, skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing.

If you are participating in the photo challenge, tell us more or show us your favorite summer outdoor places.

In case you need inspiration…

This month I’m focusing on the color EVERGREEN, a dark green commonly found in pine trees. Feel free to choose any color of green, and while you’re at it, explore the colors of green outdoors.

I’m convinced my love of evergreens (pines, cedars, etc.) came from two years spent living near Portland, Oregon, as a child. Once we moved back to San Diego, most of the “evergreens” we saw were palm and eucalyptus trees.

I still love walking in the forested Portland neighborhoods when we visit.

My parents loved the great outdoors. Every summer for over 10 years, my parents took us camping in Tuolumne Meadows, the high country of Yosemite National Park. San Diego can be warm in summer, so despite not wanting to leave my friends behind for 2-3 weeks, I appreciated the cool alpine air.

Back in the day, I loved trees so much, I climbed them and then purposely jumped from them!

During our road trip in March, we stopped to visit the Redwoods State and National Park on the Northern California Coast. I wrote more about it here.

Fun with Photo Editing

The years spent camping in the Great Outdoors, especially Yosemite and other U.S. national parks, engendered a continuing family legacy that I’m proud to share with my children and grandchildren.

mountains are calling

In summer 2020, despite the pandemic closing many places, we still managed to meet my daughter, my brother, and their spouses for a long weekend in Mammoth Lakes, California.

Of course, we took lots of pictures, but my daughter took some and surprised me with a watercolor she painted from one of the pictures.

My daughter did a great job capturing us and the trees. Pine trees are not that easy to paint! As I processed the digital version of the image, I found the original and reimagined edits of the same image.

Birds Tending their Babies Capture the Essence of an Evergreen Life

If you’ve followed my blog over the past three years, you may remember the two Say’s Phoebes that have turned our patio cover into their own little “AirbnBird.” This cozy spot has become a regular nesting place and a lively part of our home.

two brown birds

This year’s first brood fledged in mid-May, and like many young birds entering the world for the first time, they looked a little bewildered as they waited for Mama and Papa to return with food.

“I wonder when Mama is coming back with food?”

It’s hard not to feel connected to these delightful birds. They have transformed our simple patio into a lively hub of activity, highlighting the beauty of wildlife and reminding us daily of the wonder in the natural world. Stay tuned for more Phoebe stories (hint)… the second set just hatched June 12!

  • Don’t forget to create a pingback to this post so that other participants can read your post.
  • I also recommend adding your post’s URL to the comments.

If you are participating in the photo challenge, I look forward to seeing how you interpret the various shades of green and evergreen this week. Creativity is encouraged, so please share your own photographs (old or new), poems, original short stories, and music inspired by the theme.

  1. Thank you, Susanne! We were fortunate to see Liberty Bell during golden larch season. I thought about you when we visited Redwood state park. The next batch of Phoebes is being fed nonstop by the parents. Fun to watch!

  5. Hi Terri – I just got online and have to track the severe weather we have on our agenda today (sigh). I am glad you liked my intense green reflections for the heron … it makes up for my lackluster green in Sunday’s post. 🙂 I almost included the faraway shot so no one thought I altered that bright green reflection. Anyway, I’m posting the link here and will be back to reply to comments later.

      1. I hate hearing that Terri – I hope it has been contained (somewhat anyway) by now. I’ve been checking all my weather sources all afternoon; the severe weather has been stalled for now. I hate that the most-severe weather comes after dark … the torrential rain is just the appetizer. I wish I could give you some of this two (maybe three) inches of rain we are getting today.

  8. Awww, the babies are here. Interesting how you connected them to evergreen. Some of your pictures conjure up pleasant memories of hikes together. All of them are gorgeous. There’s nothing like the Northwest for pictures of evergreens. We are blessed.

    1. Those are the “old” babies from May. There were two and I think they are still hanging out in the field next to us. They parents are feeding 4 babies again in the nest and are non-stop!
I think there are green backgrounds in nearly all my photos, at least around here, Marsha!

      1. Of course, this is the green time of year. We even have quite a bit of green still here. Once the weather stays warm for a while, everything will turn again. I figured those babies were pretty well developed. They didn’t even look like babies anymore.

  9. Finally getting my post done. I loved your photos and the thought about an evergreen life. So good. It’s kind of cool how many songs and thoughts there are surrounding “evergreen”. I don’t think I could ever do the ropes course. Yikes.

    2. Hi Kirstin & Terri

I decided to try and track both of you down for a quick favor.

Last week I submitted a story to Marsha’s Story Chat project and we’re coming to the end of the comment period discussing it.

It’s the kind of story I think you would enjoy and both of you would not struggle to point out where it could be better. I would greatly value your giving it a chance to both entertain and (expect to) maybe learn something of value.

It’s right at 2000 words but the initial feedback suggests the story flows fast with no one losing interest.

      Interested?

Oh – and Terri – your photos remain some of the best I’ve ever seen. My shots never look this amazing. I think you have both better equipment and better eyes than I do.

      1. Dear Terri
Green is in the middle of the colour circle. It is a colour I had a problem with for years. No clothes in my wardrobe were green. On the other hand, I know that in many colour theories (Goethe/Steiner, Kandinsky, Klee and Bauhaus, e.g.) green is seen as the balanced mixture of the coloured representative of light (yellow) and the coloured representative of darkness (blue). So it’s the symbol of balance and seen as static.

  22. I used to dislike evergreens when I was much younger. Now I am much older, I love evergreens. Of course, there were a couple of evergreens I really liked – Pine and Holly, but that’s because of my love for a certain time of the year.

Good to hear your outdoor space is becoming a hive of life, Terri. And now a second hatching. They love their home. Will there be anymore hatchings, or is it too late now?

    1. Funny how our preferences for things change, Hugh. I’m glad you like evergreen now, inspired by Christmas time. I’m sure our visits to the mountains as a teenager and being surrounded by evergreens at 10,000 feet elevation was the reason I love the colors of green.

Those Phoebes hatched the second brood last week, which is typical. In three years there have been four successful hatchings. The parents are feeding the hungry babies non-stop. I saw at least three fuzzy heads pop up in the nest yesterday. Always fun and more fodder for my future children’s books!

  26. Those are some lovely pictures highlighting green and the great outdoors Terri. Tuolumne Meadows was a spectacular place where you escaped for a few weeks every Summer. Your daughter did a great job on the painting! The Phoebes are so cute and they feel safe at your place, so I’m sure they will be back to nest for many years; likely their offspring will raise their families here as well. My post today is about spanning the seasons and looking back at Winter but I touch on our current season. We have had a volatile Spring, coming off of a severe weather week once again. I feel like we have experienced Summer several times already and it’s still Spring! I will also have a post for Wednesday that is very green!

    1. Thank you, Linda! Clearly I have countless evergren forest and mountain photos. And now I live within the forest with mountains around. The second brood of babies hatched Friday and parents are busy. Some fledgling ravens were hanging around here the last two days but Brodie barked them away. I’ve seen the two fledglings that hatched in May and watched one take a bath in the bird bath. They dont fly into our backyard anymore because the nesting parents shooed them away. I think by August, they will all migrate together. I would hope the babies eventually come back. Phoebes live 3-6 years. Ill check out your posts!
