Sunday Stills: I Like to Ride My #Bike

Let’s end the month of May with a better-late-than-never celebration of bicycles! May was National Bicycle Month according to SOURCES.

Years of Cycling in Sacramento

I LOVED the American River Bike Trail in Sacramento when we lived nearby. I miss the easy access to the trail, just 9 minutes by bike, from our former home.

On the bike trail, I enjoyed miles of views of the American River, as well as the variety of cyclists and fitness enthusiasts.

According to this SOURCE, the trail is 32 miles (51 km) long and is used as a major recreational destination, as well as a commuter artery for cyclists. The trail is considered one of the longest paved purpose-built bike trails in the country.

This was my last ride in October 2020 before we moved to Washington.

Sacramento State University, where I studied for two degrees and later worked as a Lecturer, is easily reached by the bike trail, resulting in many bike racks on campus.

The Sacramento State University Aquatic Center at nearby Lake Natoma offered students the opportunity to ride a water bike for the first time!

Here in Nine Mile Falls, we have the amazing Centennial Trail nearby, but I can’t ride my bike to it. Rather, I have to load my bike into the back of the car or hubby’s truck and drive down the “treacherous” rural highway to the trail.

  1. What a grand and well used bike trail that was in Sacramento. Poor El Paso, we try to establish bits of bike trails wherever we have an usually and awkwardly wide section of road. They just seem to spring up out of nowhere and continue for a few blocks and this disappear. I love the idea of riding places on my bike but would be terrified to try to do so on our poor paths. We do ride to the gym now and then, meandering through neighborhood streets. Are you riding the electric bike these days? We toyed with getting some but resorted to (cheaper) standard bikes. Someday, maybe.

Love the photo of your bride daughter and her groom on the motorcycle.

  8. I used to do lots of cycling, but sold my bike just before the pandemic hit, Terri. Then, during the pandemic, everybody started buying bikes, and it was not long before there was a shortage of them in 2020. I sold just at the wrong time.

These days, it’s more about walking for me, although I have been tempted to buy an e-bike. We’ve got lots of cycling paths here, and last week there was a three-day cycling festival. Lots of riders out enjoying the sunshine. Unfortunately, Austin is not a fan of bikes and barks at them a lot, so I had to pick my times to walk him.

Good to see you wearing protective gear while riding your bike, Terri. I have a relative who had a terrible accident while riding her bike, made worse because she was not wearing a protective helmet. It’s so important to protect ourselves even while riding a bike.

    Have a great week.

    1. Thanks for “riding by” Hugh! What terrible timing to have sold your bike just before the pandemic. My rides on the bike trail in 2020 saved me and was the only exercise I got. It was odd to see a few people wearing masks while riding then.
I believe you would really appreciate an E-bike! The PAS system gives you a boost for hills. I bought the Blix brand foldable ebike. You could get a dog trailer to cart the pool pups!
I need to ride more, so the rack for my car is a must!

      1. My next-door neighbour has an e-bike, which I’m sure he’ll allow me to try out if I ask, Terri. The problem is that I dislike asking. But it may be the catalyst to get me cycling again. I don’t think I’d be able to cycle as far as I used to, though. So I’d definitely keep up with my daily walks. I always hit at least 10,000 steps a day.

I saw drivers wearing face coverings while driving with nobody else in the car and the driver’s window down. It gave me some head-scratching moments, but there must have been a reason why they felt the need to wear one.

      2. Oh just ask, Hugh, you will love the experience! Tell your neighbor I influenced you to try… “my American friend insists I try your ebike,” hahaha 😆
I ride my ebike with the PAS turned off most of the time, but it’s sure helpful for hills and long inclines.

That young lady on the unicycle is talented – she looks like she is just a kid! I like the shadow pic you have in this post – that’s a fun idea. We have a large county park which closes to traffic every Saturday from May 1st through Labor Day. I went once, parked and just walked along the road, but it’s really more of an experience for rollerbladers, bikers, especially the recumbent bikes. My post tonight will be linked to your Flower Hour tomorrow. It was about walking in the ‘hood. We were about to have a frost that night, so I hurried and got photos of the Spring blooms first.

    1. Our rural living areas seem similar in that respect, Brian! The sleepy, rural town of Nine Mile Falls grew during covid as people left California (us included) and many poor driving habits like speeding and illegal passing came along with them. The bike rack will be a help soon! I wouldn’t need a bike rack if I could ride a unicycle! 🤣

The ones here are a bit dodgy too, but the main highway is wide and has mostly good shoulders. Speaking of which, here’s mine today: https://grahamsisland.com/2026/05/31/get-on-your-bike-and-ride-2/

    1. Thank you, Graham! Sadly the highway is the main artery (Hwy 291). There are plenty of ATV trails alongside it but they don’t work for cyclists.
