The Flower Hour #29: If a Purple Tulip Could Talk

For the Flower Hour, share your images of flowers, gardens, fields of flowers, seasonal leaves and plants, fungus, algae, cacti, blossoms, berries, and wildflowers. Bouquets and silk/faux flowers are welcome.

Did You Notice My New Theme?

Thank you for indulging my break… changing my theme to a Block Theme (not to be confused with the block editor) was rather… EASY! I spent a whopping 3 hours on the nuts and bolts of adding widgets to the new sidebar, fumbling with fonts, and fiddling with the menu. It was a non-event, really, but I’m glad I went to the trouble.

If you decide to switch to a Block Theme, my advice is to go through your blog and copy/paste all information from your menu items, widgets, and their corresponding links and details. Don’t forget to note (or create new) the images you like for your About Me page.

It took me longer to curate all the info from my blog site into the Word doc than it did to actually change to the block theme. I did take my blog offline in case I hit snags. No one missed me for those three hours it was offline 😉!

Visit Hugh’s Views and News to see how he switched seamlessly, with some visual “how-to’s”. If you are reading from the Jetpack App on your mobile, it may be hard to tell if anything has changed. If you’re visiting from a computer, you will be able to see the layout and the subtle changes.

I am a Premium WordPress user. My subscription comes with free access to countless Block themes. I am currently using the Carnation theme. This theme offers a “featured article” option, which I’ve never used before.

For more information on Block Themes and the benefits of using them, read this WordPress Article.

  4. I see that most people like your new theme and know you put a lot of work into it. The one problem I have is the font is extremely light and hard for me to read. I do read most in the Jetpack App, however, I do switch it over to browser on my phone for easier access to linking my posts to yours.

  10. Your tulip photos remind me of the tulips we had a few weeks ago, Terri. They’re almost all gone now, but gave a great display this spring. The blue skies certainly bring out their colours.

And what can I say about your new theme than it’s brilliant and makes your blog look even better. I’m glad to read that whole process went well for you. WordPress have certainly made it much easier to swap themes. If you’re like me, you’ll be tinkering with the new theme for the next few weeks. In the end, I had to stop myself from making changes and being satisfied with how it looked. I’m pleased as punch with mine.

  17. The Tulips, especially the close-up in the featured image are just exquisite Terri, so vibrant! I’m amazed it only took you three hours (after your initial prep work that you had mentioned to me and in this post that you would be doing). Congratulations! Maybe that will spur the rest of us to take the plunge with the block theme as well. I like the look of the new blog theme Carnation – it has nice clean lines. I will have a flower post for Wordless Wednesday to add here tomorrow.

    1. Thank you on both counts, Linda! WordPress is making things easier, and this theme was previewed carefully before I decided. If you take the plunge (kind of like a shallow bathtub 🤣), pay attention to your menu items and pages, and any widgets you use if you use a sidebar. Honestly, I read most posts from my phone that I only see the post itself.
I also got inspired to begin a new Sunday Still feature, “animals”, maybe a monthly feature. There will be a lot of birds… lol! Looking forward to tomorrow’s post!

      1. That is interesting Terri … if I go that route, I will keep all this in mind. I like the idea of that feature about animals, a monthly feature like the colors. My goslings from last Sunday will fit there nicely. I saw no squirrels that day, but three sets of goslings made my day!

Here is my post from today, Lotuses, albeit sans blooms, but if they had blooms, the Egret would not be so easy to find. 🙂
