Although I have ZERO flowers in my backyard now, my archives are full of sweet-smelling beauties that graced past gardens.

Sweet Memories

A few weeks ago, my uncle passed away. Allan was my mom’s younger brother who lived near Olympia, Washington. He had just celebrated his 82nd birthday. I’ve been gathering a few photos for my cousins this week.

I came across this one of my mom from Christmas 1990. She rocked her red sweaters.

I shared the photo on Facebook for my cousin and commented, “I hope Allan is being nice to his sister…” She commented back, “I laughed through my tears, cousin!”

I borrowed this photo of some sweet treats served at my daughter’s wedding in 2023.

    I hope you had a sweet Valentine’s Day and weekend, Terri. We had a great homemade meal with tiramisu for dessert. Not only was it sweet enough, but also rather boozy.

    I am sorry for your loss and my condolences to your family. I hope you are all able to think about the sweet times that will bring back happy memories during this sad time.

    I write this comment on Shrove Tuesday, where in the UK we celebrate with pancakes. I like mine with some lemon juice with just a small sprinkling of sugar. Today always reminds me of the pancake races that happened every Shrove Tuesday, where mainly housewifes would run a course while tossing a pancake in a pan. My mum always participated. All great fun.

      Oh, I forgot about Shrove Tuesday. It must be Fat Tuesday too, since Lent begins tomorrow. And Lunar New Year begins today! Wow!

    Terri, well now as I get ready to go to bed I am hungry for waffles with berries – they look delicious! The picture of your mom and her brother when they were young is very nice and I think you look like her in this photo. Yes, your mom looked great in red by the fireplace. Very festive! The flowers look pretty, the sweets tantalizing. I liked the Laura Ingalls Wilder quote. I just finished the book “Bright Lights, Prairie Dust” by Karen Grassle who played “Ma” on “Little House on the Prairie.” Lots of drama in her life – let’s just say “she ain’t no Ma Ingalls!”

      Thank you, Linda! Mom was a looker and quite a character. So was her brother. Both incredibly intelligent. That side of the family were educators. My cousin is a principal at a high school, my brother has an Ed.D and is president of a national teacher training company. I taught at the university level for 10 years. I think they would be proud.

    Jim Gaffigan always makes me smile. And Laura Ingalls Wilder was so wise.

    Look at all of those delicious sweets. I was fortunate enough to substitute in a prek classroom where a little girl brought cupcakes for her birthday. Each cupcake had about an inch of delicious icing. I was in pig heaven.

    Can almost smell those beautiful blooms through the computer. We have planted a rose very similar in color to the one in your photo. But it has only bloomed once. Our neighbor’s roses bloom and thrive with absolutely no attention or care from them!! Waaa!! I don’t get it.

    Such a sweet post Terri (😉), loved it from start to finish. So happy part of it worked for our challenge this week. Happy you had a chance to share your thoughts on your uncle and the rest of the family. My mom was an only child and my dad’s 2 sisters and his brother have all passed, as have they. Family time becomes ever more precious as time goes on. Glad you’ve made a point of spending time with yours.

    A lovely post, Terri. Your write-up is as beautiful as your pictures. My brother-in-law’s mom passed away last week and I said, ‘She’ll be fine. My parents are there to take care of her.’ Cakes are so tempting but I’m keeping my distance from them these days. It’s no longer as easy as it was to keep away the inches around the waist.

      Thank you, Jacqui! Time swiftly passes and we’re but a vapor in the wind, so it’s important to keep in touch with our lived ones. My daughter send me the pic of my mom. It was a cellphone pic of a hard copy photo, but I’d never seen it before. Nice to see Mom vital and happy then.

Sadly for me, I was recently diagnosed as being “pre diabetic” so I’m doing everything in my power to keep it under control without having to resort to meds. Ergo, no more cake. 😦 Still, off topic, you wrote eloquently – your uncle would be very proud of you. xx
