Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Shades of Red, White, and Blue

Having just celebrated America’s 248th birthday, I thought using the colors of the US flag (red, white, and blue) would be a fun photo challenge this week. For those participating in the challenge, feel free to use shades of red, white, and blue combined or separately.

While many cities solemnly celebrated Independence Day on July 4th with speeches, parades, and a little pomp, as it should be, freedom and pride continue as the overarching themes of this American holiday. Most Americans are happy to have a summer holiday and blow off fireworks!

Sky Show 2024

In our rural neighborhood, there is always an illegal pyrotechnic show to be seen nearby! We can sit outside in our backyard and enjoy the free show. No crowds, free parking 😉

Fireworks
Neighborhood Fireworks

This year’s backyard pyrotechnics were quite amazing! My brother-in-law exclaimed he’d never seen anything like it. Even better was when they were all done at 11:00 p.m. Miraculous!

Our rural county is strong in fire prevention, and a fire station is one block away. These illegal fireworks may have been close to home—we’d never seen any that looked like they were over our house—but even in the neighbors’ “obedient disobedience,” things stayed safe. But we had our hoses ready.

Windy Colors

For 10 years, when we lived in Sacramento, California, celebrating the Independence Day holiday meant spending a long weekend at the Sacramento River Delta. The colors of red, white, and blue were everywhere.

Windsurfing days are far behind us, for me, at least. We enjoy spending the holiday in our own backyard.

Property of the Red, White, and Blue

The bird show around our property can be quite colorful!

Erma Bombeck says it best…“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” – Erma Bombeck

Sunday Stills Photo Challenge Reminders

The Sunday Stills weekly-themed photo challenge is easy to join. You have all week to share and link your post. Please use your original images, whether new or from your archives.

  • Remember to title your blog post a little differently than mine.
  • Please create a new post for the theme or link a recent one.
  • Entries for this theme can be posted all week.
  • Tag your post “Sunday Stills.”
  • Don’t forget to create a pingback to this post so that other participants can read your post.
  • I also recommend adding your post’s URL to the comments.

I can’t wait to see how you interpret this week’s various shades of red, white, and blue! Creativity is encouraged, so please share your photographs (old or new), poems, original short stories, and music inspired by the theme.

Join me next week as we explore things to do in your state and local parks.

As the sun sets on another Independence Day weekend, I leave you with the amazing colors of a summer’s stormy sky. I hope everyone stayed safe during the fireworks displays. Wildfire season has begun in the west, along with blazing heat.

    1. Thank you, Maria. I hear of so many more fires starting in California as a result of improper fireworks handling. So far it’s not a big issue here.

  3. I’m glad you enjoyed the celebrations, Terri. The fireworks look fantastic, but I do worry about wildfires breaking out because of them. You mentioned that you had hosepipes ready, so I hope you didn’t have to use them.
I dread firework season in the UK (November) because my two dogs get so stressed out because of the noise. We tried various methods to keep them calm, but nothing seems to work. The best solution seems to be to close all windows and doors, close all curtains, turn on the TV or radio on a high volume and hope for the best. I always feel so sorry for them when they start hearing the fireworks. Some people and events are now turning to light displays (without too much noise). Drones are used and they make amazing images and pictures in the sky. I’m hoping these shows will take off. There seems to be far less fireworks now than when I was a kid, but I think the cost of them has also caused that to happen.
I hope you enjoyed the trifle. It looks very different to a sherry trifle I love eating, usually at Christmas time.

    1. Hi Hugh! My trifle was very rustic but delicious. I’m sorry to read about your pups’ anxiety over fireworks is so traumatic. Brodie’s was bad, but we sat outside the last two 4ths to watch the fireworks and he seemed to be calmer when he could see them. Turns out our old house in Sacramento wasn’t well insulated, and our new current house has excellent insulation due to being built with 2×6 lumber. The old days at the delta were a good escape from the fireworks. We also got a prescribed sedative from our vet.

I like the idea of drones. Despite the use of illegal fireworks here in our rural county, the users were surprisingly respectful and stopped by 11pm over 3 nights.

      Have a great weekend!

You, too, have a great weekend, Terri.

I never put feeders out, because we always had a house full of dog guests and bird seed isn’t good for them. My current dog is part lab and would eat anything. 😆Still, we see a lot of birds, just not the variety you have.

Our 4th was similar although the displays we saw from the driveway/street were near the city’s fireworks so we weren’t sure who was putting up the 2nd and 3rd set we kept seeing above the trees. Nothing too close and I’m sure the noisemakers kept going long into the night but I was zonked out!

If I can put together a trifle, anyone can! It’s just layers of cake, pudding, fruit and whipped cream. I used Costco blueberry muffins and cut them into slices, added some cream cheese jello pudding, and layers of fruit. I saved the whip cream for last right before I served it then added more fruit. Check out Nancy’s post–she’s a pro!

I always enjoy seeing your bird photos.

    1. Many thanks, Linda! When I saw the first fireworks in July 2021 I thought we were doomed! But the neighbors who shott them off are quite respectful of the “rules” and shut them down by 11pm. In Spokane Valley I heard they were terrible–loud booms going all night for days (like how Sacramento was).

Glad you liked the trifle–I thought I still had a trifle bowl but it must have belonged to one of my daughters. Anyway, my clear bowl was half the size and I could improvise the ingredients.

      1. One of our prior governors (Rick Snyder) decided that since everyone drove across the state line to buy the big fireworks in Ohio, he would get the revenue for Michigan instead. Yes, the Ohio fireworks were illegal, but they didn’t sell the big ones in the tents that spring up before the holiday. So he allowed the big fireworks – some of the booms sound scary.

We had a couple of incidents this holiday where someone was lighting firecrackers in the driveway and one misfired and they had extensive damage to the home and also some kids were inside their house and lit some firecrackers … a lot of damage to the home and the child lost all the fingers on their hand.

That trifle looked very festive. Perfect for the holiday!

  37. Terri, your still life of the trifle is picture-perfect. It’s got a little reflection going on or something at the bottom of the bowl. The fruit looks yummy, but it’s interesting that you didn’t have to capture the entire bowl. Sometimes I feel obligated to get the whole thing. The cloth in the bottom adds so much, but the little bit of counter adds depth, too. I love it. Are you sure it wasn’t AI? LOL Your decor is as gorgeous as ever. I love the patriotic pooch!

It was unusually quiet here, not a lot of fireworks and done fairly early.
