    1. Thanks so much, Bernie. I created a monochrome of the first one years ago and always liked how it looked.

  6. The monochrome shows so much detail where the vivid colors bring a feeling of warmth. I love sunflowers! 💛

  8. So many think a sunflower should remain in color. The detail in the feature (B&W ) photo was stunning. And yes, the images tell the story.

    1. Thank you, Donna! Yellow truly defines the sunflower but monochrome can reveal so much more. 💛

  10. I see a strand of spider’s web on the second photo. I love the way that the black and white images give a cold feel, yet the coloured one gives such warmth. A good contrast, Terri.

    1. Thank you, Hugh! The monochrome seems to reveal details we normally might not see. I thought the yellow one fit the theme for the L-A challenge too.

  15. You even captured the tiny hairs on the sunflower leaves in the monochrome shots Terri … they are almost touchable. These bright petals are so welcoming as we languish in blah landscape.

    1. Thank you, Linda. We had a nice sunny day here today and yesterday and the sun is higher in the sky, even though the high temp was only 45. Spring is getting close.

  18. Such stunning photographs of sunflowers, Terri. I wish I had seen these before I attempted to paint one. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sunflower in the first picture stage. It’s beautiful.

    1. Thank you, Smitha. When I had a garden of them a few years ago, I began to notice their budding stages were quite different than when opened. Kind of like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. I thought your painting was beautiful 😍

      1. Wow! That must be such a delight to wake up to- a garden of sunflowers. Yes, that’s what I thought…it looked like a cocoon. It’s really beautiful and I’m so glad I got to see it through your photograph. Thank you! I kept hunting the internet for clear pictures of sunflowers to paint mine. I realized how few I had seen in real. I find them so cheerful, big and bright. It’s very kind of you to appreciate the painting, Terri. XXX

    1. Thank you, Donna! Do the Arrowleaf Balsamroot wild sunflowers grow in your area? Those aren’t what’s pictured but they grow wild beginning in April.

      1. Hi, Terri – The deltoid balsamroot (Balsamorhiza deltoidea) that grows on Tyee Spit is much rarer than its cousin the arrowleaf balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) that covers the hillsides in the interior of BC. It is only found in a few places on Vancouver Island—Tyee Spit, Mount Tzuhalem Ecological Reserve, and a number of locations around Victoria.

  27. My home state of North Dakota is often #1 in sunflower production each year. We are in direct competition with South Dakota. The two states always share the #1 and #2 positions. All of the other states are well behind these two. In 2023, ND was ahead of SD by a half-million pounds.

    1. What a cool set of stats, John. I used to plant different varieties at my former home in Sacramento. Here in WA, spring brings the wild Arrowleaf Balsamroot sunflowers and we get many volunteers growing on our property.
