Sunday Stills Animal of the Month: What’s #Scary in the Animal Kingdom?

Because Halloween is around the corner, I thought we could have some fun (or fright) with sharing our images of scary animals, birds, fish, reptiles, and yes…INSECTS and SPIDERS.

Are you game?

I Don’t Like Spiders or Snakes…

… Well, I actually do, but LIKE is a strong word…

Last year, I shared this scary-looking but oddly cute cat-faced spider. She was as big around as a coin but lived contentedly in the corner of our metal gazebo. She probably laid eggs because we saw a couple of baby spiders nearby.

Doesn’t she look like a happy jack-o-lantern? Maybe not so scary.

“I excel at pulling strings!” said Arachne. “I’m a spider!” ― Rick Riordan

In early November, I happened to check on our little cat-faced friend and didn’t see her, just an empty space. Something made me look down, and there was a small, watery puddle beneath her web. I realized she froze to death in the night and simply died. I actually shed a tear for this cute little spider.

2025 was the first year I saw these cat-faced spiders. In case you don’t see the cat face, here is one from last year.

This year, the cat-faced spiders were more evident. Of course, like automobiles, once you start thinking about buying a new brand of car, you see them everywhere. An oddly scary notion.

This year, on my way home from church, where we live close enough to walk, I almost bumped into this cat-faced spider! I used AI-edits to blur the background and strengthen the web.

I found this one on my front porch. It appeared to be a little stunned, or dying. I loved the colors of it.

While visiting the famous Windmills of Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, the fog was such that it was not easy to see them well.

But the mist captured by the spider webs made for dramatic images.

I know, I know, I’ve given many of you the heebie-jeebies. Let’s move onto …

Praying Mantis

I’ve never been scared of our garden friends, the Praying Mantis, but in this case you will see why. But first of all, watch out, this is X-Rated! Females are known to eat their mate after the “act,” but it’s not always the case.

A day later, I walked through my backyard and noticed the mantis on top of one of our solar lanterns.

I got closer with my phone to snap a pic and because she was protecting the egg case, she reached toward me to defend her space. It worked, she made her point!

Shot of the egg case or ootheca. Depending on the species, it can contain dozens or even hundreds of eggs that overwinter and hatch in spring.

You already saw a bit of the famous Kinderdijk Windmills in the Netherlands we visited while on our European Rhine River Cruise. We also spent a day in Strasbourg, France. The highlight was visiting the ginormous (65,000 square feet/6044 square meters) Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Our Lady, which also houses an impressive astronomical clock.

Strasbourg's Cathedral of Our Lady
Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Our Lady

Here are some impressive dimensions.

  • Length: 367 feet (112 meters)
  • Width of front façade: 169 feet (51.5 meters)
  • Height of spire: 466 feet (142 meters)
  • Height of interior central nave: 105 feet (32 meters)

The cathedral’s spire was completed in 1439, and the building remained the tallest in the world for more than two centuries! It seems scary something like this could be built centuries ago.

  1. Oh my, oh my! I am not a fan of spiders since I have been bitten twice by a brown recluse. The area of where they bite gets eaten by their venom. Which in this case was on my legs. I had to go on a months worth of antibiotics with both bites. My second bite was worse. I now will only wear tall boots when gardening. Soon I will wear a hoodie and boots to cut back my hydrangeas. That is a sight to see!
    Happy Halloween! 🎃

  3. I actually like the spiders in your post, Terri. The Cat-faced one is fascinating because I’ve never heard of it before. We’ve had lots of spiders in the house over the last few months. From small or big ones, they are all harmless, but they do give me the creeps when they scuttle away fast.

Somebody told me that placing conkers in a room will keep spiders away. I placed some in our garage last autumn, and it seems to work. But then I felt sorry for the spiders wanting to come inside for protection from the winter weather, so I haven’t placed any conkers this year.

There is a great movie out this month called ‘Crawlers.’ The stars of the movie are spiders. Do not watch alone in the dark, though.

    1. Thank you, Hugh! Unless the spider is a black widow, I’ll give them space in the house. They do eat those annoying tiny gnats and keep to themselves. So…watching scary movies with swarms of anything has me screaming from the room. Truth is easier than fiction haha!

    1. Thank you, Hazel! We were supposed to see 19 amazing old windmills lined up. Due to the fog, we could barely see any. But the fog really illuminated the webs. Sometimes God wants us to see the unexpected!

  11. I am not a fan of spiders or centipedes, especially the latter which move faster than I can. Seeing one of them in the house when I turn the lights on in the morning will do me in until I can get rid of it and, if it runs away and is “at large” I am beside myself until it is found. 🙂 That said, I enjoyed your post Terri and your cute cat-faced spider and the beautiful shots of the web with the water droplets from the fog. My post tonight is about a Halloween walk taken at Heritage Park. I actually had a scary animal contribution for this week, but moved it to next year, to accommodate tonight’s spooky post, which has flowers, so I’ll link it to Flower Hour. Last Thursday I came upon even more spooky stuff, so I moved my Wordless Wednesday post to January so I could use it this week.

    1. Hahaha, thank you, Suzette! Both spiders and mantises are not scary to me, perhaps because I literally had a tarantula as a “Pet”…my mom kept a terrarium when we were kids. As long as a critter is not poisonous, I’m game 🙂 I could not believe I got to see those ancient gargoyles in real life. I’ve always been a bit fascinated by them. 🙂

The spiders really do make for some dramatic scenes! The cat-faced spiders look cute, though. You gave me a flashback to when I saw a spider in my bathroom, so I had to clean it up. I never had a chance to photograph it, though.
