Sunday Stills Animal of the Month: What’s #Scary in the Animal Kingdom?

Because Halloween is around the corner, I thought we could have some fun (or fright) with sharing our images of scary animals, birds, fish, reptiles, and yes…INSECTS and SPIDERS.

Are you game?

I Don’t Like Spiders or Snakes…

… Well, I actually do, but LIKE is a strong word…

Last year, I shared this scary-looking but oddly cute cat-faced spider. She was as big around as a coin but lived contentedly in the corner of our metal gazebo. She probably laid eggs because we saw a couple of baby spiders nearby.

Doesn’t she look like a happy jack-o-lantern? Maybe not so scary.

In early November, I happened to check on our little cat-faced friend and didn’t see her, just an empty space. Something made me look down, and there was a small, watery puddle beneath her web. I realized she froze to death in the night and simply died. I actually shed a tear for this cute little spider.

2025 was the first year I saw these cat-faced spiders. In case you don’t see the cat face, here is one from last year.

This year, the cat-faced spiders were more evident. Of course, like automobiles, once you start thinking about buying a new brand of car, you see them everywhere. An oddly scary notion.

This year, on my way home from church, where we live close enough to walk, I almost bumped into this cat-faced spider! I used AI-edits to blur the background and strengthen the web.

I found this one on my front porch. It appeared to be a little stunned, or dying. I loved the colors of it.

While visiting the famous Windmills of Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, the fog was such that it was not easy to see them well.

But the mist captured by the spider webs made for dramatic images.

I know, I know, I’ve given many of you the heebie-jeebies. Let’s move onto …

Praying Mantis

I’ve never been scared of our garden friends, the Praying Mantis, but in this case you will see why. But first of all, watch out, this is X-Rated! Females are known to eat their mate after the “act,” but it’s not always the case.

A day later, I walked through my backyard and noticed the mantis on top of one of our solar lanterns.

I got closer with my phone to snap a pic and because she was protecting the egg case, she reached toward me to defend her space. It worked, she made her point!

Shot of the egg case or ootheca. Depending on the species, it can contain dozens or even hundreds of eggs that overwinter and hatch in spring.

You already saw a bit of the famous Kinderdijk Windmills in the Netherlands we visited while on our European Rhine River Cruise. We also spent a day in Strasbourg, France. The highlight was visiting the ginormous (65,000 square feet/6044 square meters) Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Our Lady, which also houses an impressive astronomical clock.

Here are some impressive dimensions.

  • Length: 367 feet (112 meters)
  • Width of front façade: 169 feet (51.5 meters)
  • Height of spire: 466 feet (142 meters)
  • Height of interior central nave: 105 feet (32 meters)

The cathedral’s spire was completed in 1439, and the building remained the tallest in the world for more than two centuries! It seems scary something like this could be built centuries ago.

  1. Love the spider photos. I’ve never seen one of those before. They’re quite striking. And, of course, I like those mantis photos too. I always wanted to see the little mantises emerging from an egg case, but haven’t managed to yet. Here’s mine this week: https://grahamsisland.com/2026/10/25/i-wet-myself/

Terri, Perfect post for Halloweek week! I’m not a fan of spiders but that cat faced spider is really interesting. Your spider webs are terrific.

    1. LOL, they are not for everybody. With a name like Webster, I was destined to have an affinity with spiders!

  9. Spiders aren’t my favourite but I was sorry about the one that froze to death. I’ve never seen anything like the cat face one.
    That gargoyle is definitely scary!
It’s amazing the lengths animals will go to protecting their young. Great shot though!

    1. Thank you, Cathy! That mantis was perched upside down just within visual to me, which caught my eye! She was definitely mad. It took a lot of acrobatics on my part to get a good shot. I couldn’t get to the egg case until a few weeks later. Apparently those cases sit for months!

      1. I haven’t ever seen a mantis in the wild as it were, only in the insect house at the zoo. They are incredible insects.

  10. You went from images of spiders to a praying mantis. I am not sure that helped me in the ‘heebie jeebies’ department, Terri. LOL. But seriously, though, I love your spiderweb images. I am amazed that something so small can create such intricate and majestic beauty.

Strasbourg Cathedral’s facade is spectacular. I love how your image brought the patterns in the stone work to life. Thank you, Terri for all the work you do to present great beauty in nature and in the richness of life in your spheres of influence.

    1. Hahaha, thank you, Suzette! Both spiders and mantises are not scary to me, perhaps because I literally had a tarantula as a “Pet”…my mom kept a terrarium when we were kids. As long as a critter is not poisonous, I’m game 🙂 I could not believe I got to see those ancient gargoyles in real life. I’ve always been a bit fascinated by them. 🙂

      1. A tarantula as a pet!!! Wow, you are very brave! Gargoyles are fascinating in legend and lore. They I don’t find scary…perhaps because they carvings on the sides of buildings.

      2. LOL, yep. It’s not like I played with it or took it for a walk :). My fascination with gargoyles grew from a series of books, written by a Sacramento area author. Here is the link: A great fantasy series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29794621-magic-of-the-gargoyles

Thank you for the link, Terri. I will add it to my winter reading list for this year.

  11. Hi, Terri! 🙋

The spiders really do make for some dramatic scenes! The cat-faced spiders look cute, though. You gave me a flashback to when I saw a spider in my bathroom, so I had to clean it up. I never had a chance to photograph it, though.

The cathedral is such an epitome of opulence! I like every small detail of it, including the gargoyle (as long as it takes water away from the walls)!

Have a wonderful new week ahead, Terri! ☺️

    1. Hahaha, we all have relationships with spiders, don’t we, Aptivi? Thank you for your very thoughtful comment! Yes, I am known to grab a tissue and gently grab the spider and take it outside. I loved seeing those gargoyles. Made my day 🙂

      1. Yeah, Terri, we all have our relationships with spiders! 😂 You’re most welcome. That’s really so gentle. I haven’t seen a gargoyle, though, at least not in the region I’m in. If gargoyles don’t function as water drain, we can call them grotesques. ☺️
