The Flower Hour #44 Floral ABCs Focusing on the Letters M, N, & O

Hooray, we’re back to the Floral ABCs! This week, we’re sharing three flowers (or plants, or trees!) that begin with the letters M, N, and O. They don’t have to be blooming or in season right now—anything from your archives is welcome.

If you’re stumped, feel free to get creative and use the scientific name.

For the Flower Hour, share your images of flowers, gardens, fields of flowers, seasonal leaves and plants, fungus, algae, cacti, trees and tree blossoms, berries, and wildflowers. Bouquets and silk/faux flowers are welcome.

Off we go with the Letter M. Any guesses? I have these in my planter this summer.

marigolds

For Letter N, I could have used a couple in my media file. But I wanted to have some fun, so here is my Letter N. See hint directly below.

pink amaryllis belladonna Naked Lady

Many years ago, I posted this for the old WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, now a fond memory. Talk about going viral…apparently Google thought everyone wants to see “Naked Ladies.” I’ve included the post here and updated it.

Amaryllis Belladonna
Amaryllis Belladonna (aka Naked Ladies) lose their leaves in summer, hence their nakedness!

Because this wasn’t my best photo of Naked Ladies, I luckily found more lurking in my Dropbox files as I moved to better lenses.

OK, so you got Letter N. Let’s have fun with Letter O!

Orchid was probably easy… but can you ID these? Think of the scientific name…

I was thrilled to have this one already in my media file!

  4. Pretty flowers! I like marigolds a lot, so colorful, and used in the Mexican Festivals of Dia de las Meurtos on November 1st and 2nd. … haha love the name of Naked Ladies. I’ve never seen a real one, but so lovely they are. And I scrolled fast and haven’t seen mention of the last flower for letter O … I’m going to say it’s called an Ox-eye Daisy. I love the colors! 🙂

  10. Hi Terry, Hooray indeed. I’ve been waiting to share my pictures :). I couldn’t identify the ‘Naked Ladies’ but if I’m not mistaken, I remember Cindy had written a poem on them, a year or two ago. That was the first time I was introduced to them. I recognised the Daisies but had no idea that they had a name that began with ‘O’. I used the same formula for my flowers with ‘N’. 1. Thank you, Smitha! The Naked Ladies are known as amaryllis belladonna, both names are so unusual and seem to match the character of the plant!

  12. Well Terri, I only guessed the small Marigolds which I used to plant around any new plants to keep the rabbits from eating them (supposedly they don’t like the strong smell) It worked with my Clematis vines, but not with the Bleeding Heart plants I planted for my mom as she liked them – twice I tried planting them and the rabbits ate the plant before it bloomed, yet, the volunteer garden in Memorial Park, where no one tends it anymore, the Bleeding Heart plants flourish. I’ve never seen the Naked Ladies so I missed them and the Orchid. I like the African Daisies.

My post is from Sunday and had a few flowers in it, some Dame’s Rocket and Anemones, so I’m including it.

It was a good shadow day!

    1. Marigolds planted near tomato plants also keep these worms away, I’ve heard. I saved a baggie of the marigold seeds for next year. Good to know about the rabbits’ dislike for them.

      1. I didn’t know that about the tomato plants. I’ll have to pass that info along to my friend. They have a cottage in northern Michigan and spend the Summers there since they are retired. He is really into growing heirloom tomatoes and he keeps the seeds for the following year. My friend says he grows enough to share with everyone in their area.

  13. I love Naked Ladies….the flower version that is!!!😁 We have just finished the season here and I discovered you can grow them from the seeds as well, so I have a few pots with baby plants coming along. https://cathscamera.wordpress.com/2026/08/19/the-flower-hour-starts-with-m-n-o/

  14. These flowers are so good Terri. Isn’t it good when the scientific name can come to the rescue 😀 That had me wondering. But then I went “of course, I knew that” 🙄 I did think perhaps Ox-eye Daisy at first.

    1. Thank you, Brian! I had misnamed those daisies as oxalys, so changed it once I saw the osteospermum name. Science to the rescue.

    1. Thank you, Susanne 😁 Osteospermum is the science name of the daisies. I couldnt resist sharing the Naked Ladies and was happy to find more in my old photo files. I caught that yellow orchid with Graham when we visited the Big Island in 2019.
