Sunday Stills: A Day at the Fair, An Evening at the Rodeo

It’s summertime and there’s no better way to celebrate than to spend a day at the fair and an evening at the rodeo.

people at the fair

When was the last time you visited the state or county fair (or carnival)? How about a rodeo? Fairs and rodeos are the theme for Sunday Stills this week. If you’re stumped, or haven’t been to either one, think of things you might see at a fair. Street fairs and Renaissance Faires count too!

A Day at the Fair

Welcome. Come on in, we’re going to spend the day at the fair.

It has been a while since I attended the Southern California Expo in San Diego, in the town of Del Mar. It is now known as the San Diego County Fair. We always called it the Del Mar Fair.

One of my favorite places at the fair isn’t the midway… although Del Mar’s oceanside fairgrounds are magical…

… it’s the 4-H livestock barns, where months of hard work quietly step into the show ring. Behind every ribbon is a young exhibitor, an early alarm clock, and an animal they’ve learned to care for every single day.

“If you ever start feeling like you have the goofiest, craziest, most dysfunctional family in the world, all you have to do is go to a state fair.” – Jeff Foxworthy

Spokane, Washington, hosted the world’s fair in 1974, the first-ever dedicated to the environment. The huge pavilion stands today in Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane.

Have you ever been to a Renaissance Fair? We’ve been to several. Northern California was home to several popular Ren Faires over the years. Our family and friends went and enjoyed dressing in the Ren-Faire garb.

Time to RODEO! Yee-Haw!

Living in a rural area of Northeastern Washington, we are close to several fair grounds that also hold seasonal rodeos. We recently attended the Springdale Rodeo in June and dressed for the occasion. 🏇

Rodeos always begin with an opening ceremony, complete with the junior and senior queens of the rodeo, trick riders and an emotional salute to American veterans with the singing of the National Anthem. Check out the slide show.

Then it’s time to buckle up for the rodeo events! Everyone loves the saddle bronc riders, the calf roping and the barrel races.

All’s Fair in Health and a Rough Road-eo Ahead

I’m sorry I’ve been a bit short with comments and slow to read posts and reply this past week. Last Monday, I underwent a Mohs procedure to remove a small skin cancer from the bridge of my nose. I’m not sure why it didn’t occur to me that there would be 9 stitches involved. And pain. And “OMG I look like Frankenstein.” But I’m cancer free and the brilliant dermatologist got it in one go.

“The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.” – Leo Tolstoy

I’m not feeling as frisky as my neighbor’s horses

Meantime, the week before the procedure, I visited my doctor to get my left knee evaluated. 15+ years of pain is quite enough. He sent me for x-rays, and the results came back with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis of my entire knee. I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon soon. I’m possibly facing knee-replacement surgery but I’ll have to make do until we return from our European Viking cruise in October and our road trip to Arizona in January.

THIS JUST IN! We are hosting 6 evacuees from the horrendous wildfires that hit North Spokane Saturday. Three active fires and thousands displaced. The Autumn Lane fire and Old Trails Fire are the most devastating. We are safe and a good 10 miles from both fires, and winds have died down, thankfully. Our neighbor’s family can’t get back into their home and we’re currently hosting 6 people at our home.

Please pray for the Spokane area, Stevens County, and the firefighters and first responders who have worked tirelessly for 15 hours already. With a house full of people this morning, we are celebrating life over coffee.

  1. Love these photos, especially the rodeo ones! I grew up in Calgary so the Calgary Stampede was a big part of that experience. I love watching the rodeo events, and the chuckwagon races are my absolute favorite.

So far I haven’t made it to a Ren Faire, but I have hopes that someday it will work out for us.

Oh my gosh, the Jeff Foxworthy quote made me laugh! Thanks for linking up with WQ!

Oh, and I’m very glad your dermatologist was able to get itall, and I pray you have clean margins and no recurrence. (My hubby has had three melanomas removed so I get it).

    1. Thanks you, Kym! After years of watching Heartland, rodeos really came alive for us. Ren Faires are unique and worth a visit. I get my stitches out tomorrow, PTL! Thanks for hosting WQ with Sadje!

  2. I’m very late to the party here, but I enjoyed your fair and rodeo pics, especially the latter, since I have never been to one. And I’m glad you’re safe from the fires (so far). Good news about the cancer diagnosis; may your recovery go smoothly and quickly! 🌹 Hope your knee holds out until you’re ready to do the surgery! My husband had his bad knee replaced three years ago, and he was like a new man, feeling years younger. 😀

    1. Thank you Debbie, I know you were on a break! We’re grateful the fires have calmed down and are well contained. The damage to our town and surrounding areas is heartbreaking. I met with the orthopedic surgeon last week and I got a cortisone shot in my knee. Looking like a knee replacement coming in 2027! I want to feel like a new woman 🙂

  10. Terri,

We went to our first (and only) rodeo in Cheyenne a few years ago. I loved it! I have read a lot of alarming news about the wildfires around Spokane and thought about you and Hans. I pray that you’re safe and that the fires subside. Keep us posted. I’ve had knee replacement and the key is to workout before surgery and do the rehab as hard as you can. It’s not easy, but the results are a blessing…no more pain. Have a great week. Joe

    1. Thanks so much, Joe! A Wyoming rodeo sounds amazing. They all are, really, small or elaborate.
Yes the fires continue, the winds have died a bit but air quality is in very unhealthy range now. We live a few miles away and the fires are moving away. The devastation left behind is unreal. Thanks for your prayers, we are safe.

That line about the 4-H barns — ‘behind every ribbon is a young exhibitor, an early alarm clock, and an animal they’ve learned to care for’ — really got me. It’s the quiet corner of the fair our kids always drift to as well, long after the midway lights lose their pull. Wishing you smooth healing after the Mohs procedure, and holding your neighbors and the whole Spokane area in our thoughts as you open your home to them. Stay safe.

Sorry to hear about the surgery on your nose and now that painful knee, Terri. Wishing you a speedy recovery, although I see you are not having surgery on the knee until next year.

And the wildfires sound horrendous. They seem to be a part of every summer now and are only getting worse year by year. Manmade climate change is certainly taking hold. Hopefully, there will be rain to help put those fires out.

Love the cowboy and cowgirl outfits!

    Take good care.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Our local news clarified the structures as also being outbuildings, of which there as many as homes. I will watch the news later. I drove 5 miles to the pharmacy and how close the fire is to the east hidden by a ridge. What caused tears was to see 10 helicopters within 3 minutes, flying low up from the lake filled with water, buckets, etc, dropping them onto the fire.

  20. Terri, you and Hans look nice together as cowgirl and cowboy, right down to the cowboy boots. 🙂 I’ve never been to a rodeo, but I’ve been to a couple of state fairs in Michigan and the Exhibition and Royal Winter Fair in Toronto in the past. You’re the second blogger this week to have a skin cancer removed from their nose. I assured the first one and will assure you that my neighbor had four removed over four different times … she loved gardening in the sunshine and never wore a hat – she rallied back after each one. I wear sun protection clothing as I don’t want to apply sunscreen when walking near the water. A walker at Council Point Park had a knee replacement a few years ago. It was done on Halloween and two months later, he was back walking. I was at the Park that Winter day when he returned and said “you might want to walk in the salted parking lot as there are some icy patches and it’s windy” but he brushed it off. He said his sister had the same surgery, same doctor/hospital and the procedure is all done robotically – amazing!

I had nothing to contribute to this topic, so I will have a flower and butterfly on Wednesday to post for “Flower Hour”.

    1. Well we actually are, John. Mere miles. But the winds died down and some evacuees can go back to their homes. An area we regularly shop in was destroyed, 9 miles away. 😢

      1. Oh my gosh, be ready to flee, please. Be careful! So sad, I feel so bad for these people. 🫣🙏🏻✝️

      2. Spokane is making the news. A 38-yr national guard said this was the worst combination of fires he’s ever seen.
Its tragic. Were safe amd have opened our home to family friends.

      5. That’s good news, I hope you guys have N95 masks handy. My sister in Michigan recently dealt with the horrible smoke from the fires in Ontario which have since gone. I hope those fires are contained. I think they had the same or close to, 700 AQI number too.
