Sunday Stills Animal of the Month: Where the #Wild Things Are

“I escape into the great outdoors; where freedom’s soul forever roars.” Angie Weiland- Crosby

Are you still enjoying the Great Outdoors? Today is a BIG day with folks celebrating Father’s Day and the Official Summer Solstice converging on this Sunday. If you reside in the northern hemisphere, no doubt the sun is up early and goes to bed late.

Here in Eastern Washington, we get almost 18 hours of daylight this month. Light enough to see the wildlife enjoying the early mornings and late evenings.

Welcome to My New Photo Challenge: Animal, Bird, or Creature of the Month

graphic animal of the month
Created with WordPress Image Creator

Like my monthly color challenge, this new feature will highlight a creature from the animal kingdom each month—an animal, bird, insect, reptile, or any other critter. Some months may include a subtheme; others will simply invite you to share a favorite creature of your choice.

As always, your interpretation is entirely up to you. I look forward to seeing how participants bring this theme to life through their photos and stories.

• Share an animal, bird, insect, or other critter.
• Follow the monthly subtheme when one is provided.
• Use your own creative interpretation of the theme.

This Month’s Subtheme is WILD

For this week’s challenge, wild refers to animals living in their natural state, without human control, domestication, or regular care. Think of creatures observed in their original habitats, behaving as they would in the natural world.

They may include mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, or other critters.

Four-Legged Wild Things

Almost daily, we watch the mule deer that live in the surrounding forest visit our backyards. I spied these two young bucks, antlers in full velvet, strolling on the side of the road.

Moose on the Loose

I have seen a few moose in the years I have lived here. When seen up close, they are overwhelmingly BIG! But THIS only happens occasionally… My neighbor shared this with me, which happened in early April.

Female Moose Visiting the Backyard

Near the end of May, a young bull moose wandered down our street, then strolled nonchalantly through our backyards. All the neighbors stood and gaped at the sight!

He then heard and saw my dog, Brodie, barking on the other side of the fence from our property and quickly ambled up over the neighbor’s berm.

Young Bull Moose, My Original Image

My images were a bit blurry due to lighting (and the moose’s speed), so I enhanced this one above with Google Image AI to give you a better idea. The nearby lake attracts both moose and deer.

Wild Wings Singing the Blues

Let’s start with this cute Black-crowned night heron I saw at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in March. He looked more blue-gray than black. He may be wild, but he seemed accustomed to the visitors. They are stocky, but reach a length of about 2 feet (66 cm), and their wingspan is typically 45 to 46 inches (115 to 118 cm).

Back in the backyard, July is a busy month for all the bird species that congregate here.

This Western Bluebird pair enjoyed our birdbath last summer.

I mentioned we live near Lake Spokane. Bald Eagles congregate here with their nests and perform fly-overs above our backyard on occasion.

That about does it for the Wild Things this week.

I’m sharing this week for Dan’s CFFC Color Challenge: Blue; Johnbo’s Cellpic Sunday; Kym & Sadje’s Writers’ Quotes (WQ): Connecting with Nature, and Pepper’s One Step at a Time.

Sunday Stills Photo Challenge Reminders

The Sunday Stills weekly-themed photo challenge is easy to join. You have all week to share and link your post. Please use your own original images, whether new or from your archives.

  • Remember to title your blog post a little differently from mine.
  • Entries for this theme can be posted all week.
  • Tag your post “Sunday Stills.”
  • Don’t forget to create a pingback to this post so that other participants can read your post.
  • I also recommend adding your post’s URL to the comments.

If you are participating in the photo challenge, I look forward to seeing how you interpret the new feature this week. Creativity is encouraged, so please share your own photographs (old or new), poems, original short stories, and music inspired by the theme. Please join me next week as we look to the FUTURE.

July themes are ready to view on my Sunday Stills Photo Challenge Page, which is updated monthly.

  1. I love these photos, especially the deer and moose. What interesting encounters with the moose you and your neighbor had, and thankfully they were peaceful encounters! It makes me so happy that bald eagles are no longer considered endangered, and it’s becoming more common to see them, but it’s still a thrill! There’s a nature preserve area not too far from us where we can regularly see an eagle pair nesting and it’s fascinating.

I was so surprised the first time I identified a night heron in the wild that they are so small and squat UNTIL they stretch out their necks!

Thanks for linking up – I really enjoyed your photos!

    1. Thanks for continuing WQ! I enjoy having a bit more inspiration for my two challenge features. I’ve always been fascinated with the pacific and inland northwest. I’m thrilled to live on the Spokane side of Washington. Amazing wildlife and other things to see. Nice to meet another fellow nature lover!

This is a great idea for a challenge theme. I’m joining in, belatedly, with some dolphins: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/dolphins-but-no-whales/. And I’m sure I’ll have more to add in future months too 🙂

  7. Terri,

I would be extremely happy to live where Moose roam wild. I get an occasional deer walking through our neighborhood. Also, we have been treated to many Western Bluebird pairs here in Southern California. Their blue color is so vivid. Have a great weekend. Joe

Beware that each one you create renders at 1024×1024, and all of them land in your media file. I delete the ones I dont use. It’s kind of fun too.

  19. I’m not sure I’d want a moose trampling through our garden, but it may frighten off the rat I have recently seen. I first saw rats when living in London, so it was a shock to see one in the garden here in Wales. I think it was looking for the strawberries that the squirrels usually get.

But it’s amazing to see all the wildlife strolling around, Terri. Is there anything you wouldn’t want to see strolling around in your yard? I wouldn’t want to see a snake in my garden. Thankfully, we only have a few in the UK, and they seem to keep away from humans.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hahaha, I think the wildlife around are have gotten used to each other, Hugh. Moose are incredibly quiet and cover ground quickly when walking. I’m OK not having any coyotes too close, but we can hear them howling at night. I’ve only seen coyotes up close in Arizona! We’ve had our share of bull snakes (not poisonous) here. One napped near our pole barn between the steps! They eat the voles (tiny field mice) and the large beetles!

      Like

      1. I shudder just thinking about that bull snake, Terri. Those poor voles. I hope I never come back as either a snake or a vole. The Adder is the only venomous snake in the UK, but thankfully it dislikes humans and keeps well away from them.

I have something for your green color challenge in my newsletter tomorrow – just for fun. I’ll go scouting for a wild animal or two outside the door in the front yard. We’ll see what happens. Someone in Hanford caught a mountain lion on the night camera. We’re closer to the mountains here, so that one caught me a little by surprise. I’m a little more careful with Goldie at night than I thought I would have to be. You are definitely at the edge of civilization, and your wild animal encounters are pretty amazing. 🙂 xxxxxx

    1. Thank you, Marsha! The moose are docile like deer unless there’s a mom with calves or a bull during fall’s rutting season. My neighbor shot that video, you can see my house in the background.
We’ve learned that each season there is some animal that is a threat to domestic pets, coyotes in spring, deer/moose in fall. Someone shared a Pic of a bear walking along by the pizza restaurant in town. Having learned from the forest rangers as a kid to be wary of wildlife, I’m always careful!

      1. Good advice for us all. Even pets can be dangerous if they feel threatened in any way. I’ve heard of dogs attacking their owners even, and trust me, be wary of Moji when she’s feeling playful. I love your new challenge. It’s perfect for an ongoing one. So we can post new wildlife pictures all month, or just with this post? 28. Terri, well I know I’ll be able to find a critter for this theme for sure … I’ll have to see about the subtheme as well. Today’s theme worked for me because I had already planned on my goslings post (along with their doting, if not overbearing, dads). I always like seeing deer – it makes my day and seeing a moose would be fabulous. I’ve only heard them years ago when my folks rented a cottage up in northern Michigan. They’d call to each other all night. I’ve not seen any fawns yet this year and I don’t think I saw any last year. We have a lot of rain this week, will have heavy rain tonight, which will muddy up the trails and I like walking in shoes better than boots.

Here are my little darlings which you already saw earlier today. I posted earlier than usual since it was Father’s Day (and I always post early for Mother’s Day). What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander. 🙂
