  1. Happy New Year! I’m impressed that you’re learning a new language. I’d like to learn Spanish, but since I don’t plan to travel to Mexico this year I’m not overly motivated yet.

    1. Thanks, Debra! I grew up in San Diego so I’m supringly familiar with Spanish. I found French too hard so I started Spanish! My hubby grew up speaking Spanish and German so I can practice both on him 😀

  3. Happy New Year! Love your featured image and the dogs too. 🙂 I went back to Duolingo for a while, but got bored with it again. 😆 Five years is a long time. Congrats! Maybe I’ll try it again in future. I was doing French (too easy) and Italian (really hard!) at the same time.

    1. Thanks, Debbie! My brother’s new home has that window that looks toward the garage and they wait for him or us to come back inside. I liked the idea of learning French since we’re so close to Canada. I have trouble hearing the pronunciations even with hearing aids. I gave up and went with Spanish, a language I’ll more likely use. Have a great week!

  4. Languages are like complex puzzles. I have been plugging away at Italian for years and will keep working at it. Happy 2025. Love the landscape. The colors and light is wonderful.

  9. Happy New Year Terri! Your photos look warm, sunny and inviting. You’re making us jealous. Those dogs are excited to see their humans and it made me smile. I learned yesterday in a UK blogger’s 2024 recap that she just passed her 1,000-day streak on Boxing Day for learning French on Duolingo. I remember from past recaps she was learning French, but I didn’t remember what app she used. She is also learning British Sign Language. A top 1% learner is great. I am in Diamond League now but must stay about 25 people or be demoted.

    1. Happy New Year, Linda! It snowed back at home but already melted.

I tried French today and had too much trouble understanding some simple words. C’est was pronounced three different ways, etc! I’m now doing Spanish instead along with German. The trick for staying in higher leagues is to utilize the Early Bird chest and Night Owl chests for double exp. I’m a little obsessed 😆

      1. Our snow hasn’t stuck either Terri … yet. Walking home from the Park today, I got sleeted upon bigtime.

Now that is interesting as to your first day in French and makes me feel better as I thought French was more difficult than I remembered it and I figured it was because it was years since I had to memorize anything. Even though I advanced to Diamond by elevating to a new level each week since I started, I have put in A LOT of time learning French thus far.

Yes, there are multiple ways to say lots of words/phrases and it is difficult to sort out everything sometimes. I find myself checking out the leaderboards too. Since I want to stay at this level, I may be visiting Early Bird chest and Night Owl chest for double XP too.

Good luck with Spanish – you can speak to Hans in between lessons!

  12. As I’ve told others, I’m waiting for the day that a language chip can be inserted into my brain. I’ve never been very good with foreign languages. 🙂 Good luck with your French! Are you planning on using your skills in France?

    1. That’s funny Janis! It helps to have my hubby around who speaks both German and Spanish. After a couple of French lessons this morning, I realize it’s too hard. So I continue German and added Spanish. Keeps my brain young 😆

  13. I did start to learn Polish that way, but it didn’t come naturally to me, Terri. And it teaches Brazilian Portuguese, which isn’t ideal either, but good luck to you. My only resolution was to put more effort (or even some!) into learning Portuguese, but I guess I’m starting tomorrow. Shocking, isn’t it? Hope you had a great festive season.

    1. We had a great day, Jo. We went to the movies, the first time for me since before Covid. I had to nix French and go with Spanish. Still learning German. Hubby speaks both of those fluently! Will you try another way to learn Portuguese?

      2. When my Sister-in-law and brother-in-law lived in France, I was doing French and found that it was useful when I was there, even though they spoke English to me, and could translate in all the stores and elsewhere. Now they live in Norway, so I’m trying to get some basics before I make a trip, hopefully this year.
