Memorial Day in the US is the traditional start to summer, which brings throngs of people to lakes, rivers and oceans.
Perhaps, but not in 2020…
…as the threats of exposure and illness from the coronavirus keep people home and away from their favorite leisure spaces.
Even as most US states have opened up for some recreational activities, social distancing and closed parking lots to beaches, trails and parks may still keep people away.
This week’s Sunday Stills photo challenge theme is waterworld. If you are one of the lucky ones who can enjoy being in or around the water, tell us about your favorite water world. Show us in recent photos. Can’t enjoy the water where you live? Share your favorite water photos from your archives.
Did you know…? “About 71 percent of the Earth’s surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth’s water.”
Water Science School
Our seasonal windsurf campground in the Sacramento River Delta opened this weekend with rules for social distancing in place. Not hard to keep your distance while sailing or paddling…in light wind conditions…

Or in 40 mph winds!

After a busy day on the water, we can enjoy the sunset,

…then wake to a new day.

Some more of my favorite places to play in and around the water.
From Northern California’s Lake Tahoe, Lake Natoma and Yosemite National Park…

…heading South to San Diego Harbor,

to Baja, Mexico in the Sea of Cortez…

…and Westward to the Hawaiian Islands…

We enjoy life and live in a Water World!
Please wear a life jacket. Or borrow one.

For Sunday Stills this week, show us your own water world and what you love about it!

May is National Water Safety Month. Please stay safe in and around the water.

Thank you to the servicemen and women who have sacrificed for our country.

The sunset photo is submitted for Jude’s Photo Challenge.

Some fabulous waves there, Terri. I love being by the water, whether it’s ocean, river or lake. Here are a few of my favourites

Great photos! I never realized how hummingbirds interact with water…it’s a video, and not the best, but I was amazed by it! https://backroadsandotherstories.com/2020/05/24/coronaviru-diari…ute-not-to-share/

I hope you’re able to get out on the water today, Terri. I’ll be heading out for a swim in an hour or so. Our beach parks are open again so it’s much easier to get in now. Ironically, my post for this one is probably the wordiest post I’ve ever done, but I couldn’t pass the connection up! It’s https://grahamsisland.com/2020/05/24/waterworld/. Maybe I’ll put together some in-the-water photos for tomorrow.

I’m checking soon if I can SUP this morning. The wind died so it will be quite warm. I really need the exercise! Enjoy your swim and glad to hear the parks are open!

Thank you, Jacquie. Water is a key element in our lives. As long as water doesn’t turn my fire sign to steam, I can’t get enough of it either!

Terri,
This topic is one that I have written about often. I am drawn to water and love taking pictures in and around it. I hope you don’t mind if I bend the rules a bit and share a post I wrote last Fall while recovering from knee surgery. It fits the challenge perfectly. Love your pictures.

Thank you, Liesbet! Still social distancing at the delta, but it comes easily. I am acutely aware of the “lasts” we will be experiencing as the months go by.

Thanks, Stevie, yes I do. Not as much in the last two years for fear of injury. I only learned at age 50. Hard sport to get good at.

Oh how I love the water- I find it so calming- just to sit and watch it-whether an ocean, a river, a lake

I love the header on this post, Terri. Have you been playing with photoshop?
As a non-swimmer, I’m not a fan of the water. I’m happier with my feet firmly on the ground. I’ve had swimming lessons, but the water terrifies me. I’ve been told it’s all about confidence, but that’s something I lack when in or on water. I don’t mind a paddle in the sea, but when the water comes up to my knees, that enough for me.
However, I’ve always loved living near the sea. I love walking along the shore, especially on windy days. I also enjoy the smell and the sound of the sea. It’s very calming.
Have a lovely week.

I totally understand, Hugh, and it’s smart to have a healthy respect for any body of water. Even a seasoned swimmer should wear a lifevest in rivers, lakes and oceans. That image came from the Color planet app, one that I colored. I wish I had a shot like that of my own.

Oh, the capture of that wave in La Ventana. Beautiful, powerful. We visited San Diego overnight and tried to squeeze as much sight seeing in as possible. I remember being so taken with the marinas built right within the city! Such a contrast.
