Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Is #Mustard a Color or a Condiment?

I have to agree with Ms. Vinaite that yellow is my favorite summer color. Yellows come in many various shades, kind of like yellow and brown mustards.

Although I love all the shades of yellow, I only like actual mustard in small doses, and preferably on a hot dog or bratwurst. I promise this is the only yellow food shared in this post!

How is your summer going? It has been hot here in Eastern Washington (well, most of the whole state). So much so that we elected not to go camping last week since we would not be hooked up to electricity and hence no air conditioning or fans. I’ve had enough heat illnesses this summer.

I mentioned in a previous post that we traveled through six states on our month-long road trip in June and July. We came home to some dry grass and two heat-compromised trees, but we’ve been watering faithfully every day and the grass is green(er) and the trees are doing nicely. Nervewracking as it was to see our poor backyard full of weeds, the wind and birds were kind enough to supply the backyard with dozens of volunteer sunflowers!

(Your favorite is mine as well).There is nothing more glorious than a field of them, especially as the butterflies love to visit them as much as I do!   11. I spent much of one summer studying the mustard plant (a weed) with my HS daughter for a science project. We’re at the juncture of two plates and she wanted to evaluate whether the plant was different on one plate or the other. So I feel quite close to ‘mustard’!

  13. Love the flowers, especially the mustard and ketchup ones. I rather like mustard and use it quite a bit, including on brats once in a while.

    Sorry to hear you had to abandon your camping trip, but there’s no point going out and just being miserable (though my wife would probably say that’s the definition of camping!). I’m currently stuck at home being miserable as Covid finally caught up to me. Luckily it’s nothing too bad, mostly like a bad cold.

    • Thank you Graham! I just bought those Lazy Susans and had to have the red and yellow ones.
      We just got back from a local hike near the river and it is already a hot 90 degrees here. Camping in heat on purpose isn’t happening (your wife isn’t that wrong). Sorry you joined the Covid club, but your symptoms seem mild, thank goodness!

  14. Lovely mustard photos, Teri. I can’t wear the color, but I can enjoy it all day long when it comes in flowers and sunrises. Sorry that the heat has been such a damper on summer plans for you. It’s almost over. Until then, keep watering your garden, trees, and yourself. 🙂

    I love mustard, both the color and the condiment…the hotter, the better. Your sunflowers are as lovely as ever. My contribution is a picture of some very yellow Goldenrod sitting alongside the marsh at Edisto Beach State Park, SC. Have a great week!

  20. While I don’t have any yellow clothes to wear, a hint of yellow in my wardrobe adds color and joy and I do love this mustard tint in nature. Mark recently bought a dark yellow hat at the thrift store for $1, so this color will become a bigger part of my life now. 🙂

    I’m sure your travel trailer has at least one battery, so you should be able to run a 12V fan or two. Better than nothing. But, I agree with you that camping in this kind of weather is no fun. Having spent many days now in and around our sun-beaten camper in the upper nineties is extremely uncomfortable. Those days, the thermometer inside showed 99 as it doesn’t go any higher…

    • Enjoy looking at Mark in that mustard hat, Liesbet! 💛 I will have to look into that battery, Hans would know! I bought a couple of USB powered fans which helped us in July. Sounds pretty hot in your camper, yikes. I think being the age past 55 I have little heat tolerance!

  27. Mustard – the color is the color of my birthstone, topaz. As a child, I felt cheated that other people had such beautiful colors for their birthstones, but over the years I have come to love the color. You could be a mustard salesperson with this post, Terri. Your pictures are rich and beautiful. Thanks for linking, too. I’m glad you’re back this week but sorry the weather was so hot you couldn’t go on your trip. Our weather is perfect today. Vince and I went for a walk – TOGETHER even though he doesn’t like walking as much as I do, he couldn’t resist the beautiful day. September and cooler weather for you is coming soon. 🙂

  31. I love the expression – volunteer sunflowers, Terri. How lucky to have the birds and wildlife plant them for you.

    Like you, I’m not too fond of the intense heat. I’ve not been ill from it, like you, but I’m not a fan of summer heat. Thank goodness Lady Autumn is almost here.

    We Brits also like English mustard on a roast beef dinner and ham (in a sandwich). English Mustard is also used in lots of recipes.

    As for yellow as a favourite summer colour, I’d have to go with blue. Yellow used to be my favourite colour, but it’s all about ‘blue’ for me now.

    • Thanks for the lovely comment, Hugh! Who doesn’t love when plants and flowers pop up on their own? I will have to look up English mustard. I think mustard works well on a strong meat dish. I certainly am looking forward to your WW post tomorrow, and thank you for the reminder 😉

      • Just attempted to comment on your beautiful osprey post, Donna…it asked for a log in to comment. When I did, a prompt from jetpack came up, I logged in and it was for a one-time log in to your site, but still didn’t work. When you contact them, let them know that…others are having issues. Jez couldn’t comment on this post, yet, you could. Weird! And your ospreys look amazing! 🙂
