Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Burnt or Blood #Orange

Beware! This post has something for everyone today, including cute dogs, pumpkins, and lots of orange!

I don’t know what it is about October that it seems to represent the various shades of orange. Perhaps it’s the variety of the fall leaves, pumpkins and Halloween jack o’ lanterns. Hence our color challenge this month, focusing on burnt orange or blood orange. Those names just sound like October!

Any shade of orange will do! I’m easy. I read somewhere that orange is the color of joy and creativity. I definitely agree.

That Hometown Feeling

We were ecstatic to learn that there is a local nursery/farm down the street from our house, about a quarter of a mile away—easily within walking distance. The owners sell trees, plants, shrubs, etc, and we have purchased a few items from them. When I discovered the farm puts on a harvest festival every year, four weekends in October, I almost died from excitement. The manager asked us to volunteer which gets us a deep discount on the trees we want to buy and plant! Just the small town feel we had hoped for when we moved here.

A few miles away in North Spokane, GreenBluff Growers Association boasts over 60 farms, wineries, breweries and event venues. When we visited there two weeks ago, stepping into the various farms felt like we were right at home during the harvest.

As much as I enjoyed what Greenbluff had to offer, our neighborhood Fall Festival is on par with any of those farms with vendors, entertainment, kids activities, pumpkins and food. Did I mention their homemade pumpkin donuts? Amazing!

Needing More “Orange”-spiration?

Smoky Suns

Smoke during the summer from nearby and distant fires in the west gave us unhealthy air quality but strangely beautiful orange sunrises and sunsets. Our firefighters worked overtime and we are grateful for their efforts.

Fabulous Flora

The trees and wildflowers are showcasing their orange right now. My neighbor’s maple tree is orange now but will turn bright red in a matter of days.

Even the Rocks Cry Out in Orange

While we visited Sedona, Arizona, in August, the “red” rocks for which Sedona is famous, showed their joyous orange hues in certain lights.

    We LOVE festivals, and there is no festival better than a fall festival. I understand your excitement. Fall lingers in our hills, whereas spring disappears in a couple of weeks, making fall my favorite time of the year. Halloween and Thanksgiving are always a lot of fun. My contribution this week is a Jack-O-Lantern I carved for my Mom. They are having a carved pumpkin display in her retirement home and she needed an entry. Have a great week and enjoy the season!     • Aww, thank you, Jo! It is easy to be so happy here, with everything so festive for fall and being around joyful folks. It’s very infectious and we are so grateful to develop these new relationships and meet new people. Glad you enjoyed my smiling kettle and my happy dog!

    • When I thought of orange for October’s color challenge, of course I thought of you, Debbie! I like small pops of orange around me but I can’t wear it too bright or it clashes with my red hair. But you look amazing in it! Greens are my wearables. Glad you liked the kettle–loved that happy accident.

  28. Terri – Well, orange you lucky to discover all these orange items to fill your post with and the happiest orange was your teakettle and even the ceramic container behind it. Your sunsets are exquisite, the orange of pumpkins and flowers are why both of us love the Autumn so much. Looking forward to your pink post next!

  49. Pumpkin doughnuts? I’m not so sure, Terri. We don’t see a lot of pumpkin stuff in the UK, apart from Halloween week. I did try pumpkin pie once but wasn’t taken by it. However, where I worked, somebody had made it, so perhaps it was the cook rather than the pumpkin? I don’t even see pumpkin spiced coffee anymore. It’s more about cinnamon or mulled wine flavoured coffee at the moment.

    I love the fun photo of Hans driving the children’s ride. He must have had a great time. And the photos of the farm are precisely how I think farms are like at this time of the year in your part of the world. Haloween isn’t as popular in the UK, although the shops still sell plenty of Halloween goodies. Years ago, I dressed up and went to Halloween parties, but many have been cancelled again this year because of the pandemic.

    • Pumpkin spice anything is crazy popular on the west coast, to which I can attest, Hugh. We’ve been lucky with warmer than average fall temps which just adds to the ambience of Autumn. After 9-11, Halloween truck or treating died down drastically in our old neighborhood. Not sure what to expect here yet. And of course, covid has reduced the indoor parties.

  58. You are so very lucky having a nursery farm so close by! Wow. I know for me that would be very expensive though…it’s impossible to just visit a place like that. Wonderfully inspiring fall pictures Terri. Thank you for sharing ❤
