Sunday Stills: Circles, Triangles, #Squares, Oh My!

It has been a couple of years since Sunday Stills focused on geometry! You know, circles, squares, triangles and rectangles? Geometry appears in nature and becomes a photographer’s dream when angles fit together to enhance an image. This week, look through your archives or search for new geometric angles either made by human hands or by Mother Nature’s.

Relaxing Between the Lines

Just steps from my home are wonderful backroads where I can walk my dogs and relax my mind. I hear the wind in the trees, notice the changing colors and shadows, and understand that no one is within 1000 yards of me. Most of the photos shared today are taken on some of my walks.

Marsha’s Writer’s Quotes Wednesday Writer’s Challenge is all about relaxing this week.

Walking is my main method of relaxation. I don’t go over my lines or try to solve the world’s problems, I just enjoy the scenery and the wildlife.

Almost in the middle of this backroads trail stands this lone, tall tree, showing off its straight lines.

Angle Abstraction

We are very close to finishing the buildings here and to close out our loan, so I will soon be able to relax! Meanwhile, here are a two abstract angles of our pole barn/shop and patio. You can see a little more of the shop in the featured graphic.

Journey the Eagle Update

The family has not been seen in or near the nest since Journey was released. He looked so strong when he was released, flying high.

According to Bluebell Court Eagles hostess on Facebook, Diana G explains: “I believe Journey is ok, following his parents and learning to hunt. Eagles don’t tend to gather at this part of the lake…although that could be due to Mom and Dad chasing all away.” Another commenter on Facebook said, “Lots of eagles at the far end of the lake…we have counted 16-20 depending on when we go. Good mix of young and adults…they are probably hanging out there.”

Nature gifted these eagles with powerful instincts that we can only imagine. Perhaps it’s time to let go and trust that nature always has its way.

Busy with Dad

My 80-year old dad loves Tuolumne Meadows.

I’m sorry I missed reading some of your posts this week! My dad and step-mom were here most of the week visiting from Northern California and we had to explore and relax a little. We celebrated his 85th birthday at a family dinner, visited the Bowl and Pitcher area of the Spokane River, then off to Idaho to Post Falls. I believe they really enjoyed the socialization and the visit was good for Dad to see our new lifestyle and engage with more people.

  5. I’ve got an angle on what I want to write today, but it may be later getting there. I’m down to only one tree square scheduled ahead. I’m so glad you are having a great time with your day.     • Thanks, Natalie, we had a great time with Dad and my step-mom. They weren’t impressed with all the pine trees since they also live in the mountains, LOL, but they loved our new home. I’m Journey is in great shape and off on his adult journey! I literally was reading your post when I saw your comment!

      • We’ve been lucky regarding the smoke. None here at all, just dry blue skies. I think we’re far enough west that there aren’t any fires west of us. Keeping my fingers crossed, too, since we live in the woods.

    As a former home builder, I am greatly enjoying the construction of your pole barn. Your home page picture of the barn is a good one! The smoky sunrise picture is a familiar image out here in the west. Praying for all of the folks in the path of the wildfires. My contribution for the week is an image of Liberty Pool in the Geyser Basin in Yellowstone NP–almost a perfect circle. Great topic! Joe

    • Thanks, Joe! Seems like the men get a kick out of all this construction in our backyard. Whenever the male members of our family and friends visit the first place to gawk is the pole barn…forget the inside of the new house, LOL! We have been surprisingly close to wildfires here but surrounded by rivers and lakes where fire fighters can douse them effectively. That is one cool image of the Liberty Pool!! Have a great week!

    • Heehee, thank you, Tina! I almost didn’t link this week then realized some of the images worked! Dad did well and both really benefitted from adult conversations. Covid really isolated them both and only talking to 5 year old grandson (my step-mom’s) has its limits!

  27. Yay for celebrating your Dad’s birthday in person. Very special.

    Loving the look of what we would call a SHED and I know my husband would be pretty envious of that space.

    I remembered my Year 6 geometry lessons in 2016 when I became hooked on drawing mandalas and now I “see” them everywhere in nature too. Your pinecone is but one example.

    Thanks for the Sunday Stills show…looking forward to more in August.

  42. This is very cool, Terri. I can imagine with this challenge of geometric shapes, your eye would be definitely be on the alert for shapes that would be applicable. Being a tree lover, that one tall tree is my favorite. And Happy Birthday to your dad. amazing, 85 years. Still looking very active! 😀

  43. I love these types of challenges when they ask for shapes because they always remind me of the very first photography challenge I participated in. It was over on Cee’s blog, and she picked my photo as one to highlight the following week. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was with that happening, Terri. Here’s the photo I entered, which asked for angles and shapes.

    Note that I wasn’t watermarking my photos back then.

    As for your walks, well, they sound breathtaking. It sounds so peaceful, although I feel a tad sorry for that lone tree. And I love how you captured the sun in the wind turbine at the delta. That’s a clever bit of photography.

    So pleased you had a great time when your dad and stepmother visited. Did you go fishing with him?

    • We are truly blessed to live where we do, although the smoke from nearby wildfires is in the air, just like Northern California. Oh well. As for that sun in the wind turbines, it took a few shots to get it right, thank you. How cool to share that photo from your first photo challenge, Hugh. That positive feedback spurs us on to keep trying and validates the efforts! We were so happy to see Dad…that photo was from a few years ago. Have a wonderful week!

  54. My brother-in-law does a lot of carpentry and wood-working. They have purchased land on a lake in southeastern Texas and were hoping to build a lake home and a pole barn but the home owners’ association poo-pooed a pole barn for some reason. They may have to sell the property to find something that better suits their needs. Will be anxious to watch yours come along.

    I have my July photos in the works for Sunday Stills. Glad to see your photos for inspiration. That abstract shot of your table and rug is terrific.

    Hope you enjoyed the best visit with your dad and step-mom. We are trying to talk my MIL to come out for a visit. No luck so far.

    • That is a shame about the no-go on the pole barn. They are literally everywhere in rural America. And once this subdivision becomes a HOA, we all have to have a structure in which to park our vehicles. For that I am grateful. I hope your BIL can work it out, Leslie! We did enjoy seeing my dad and SM while they were here.
