Sunday Stills Color Challenge: A Portland Summer in #Pink

Welcome to the Sunday Stills Monthly Color challenge this week!

June’s color is any shade of pink.

Depending on where you live geographically, you may be experiencing shades of pink all around you as we near summer here in the northern hemisphere. If the color pink escapes you in nature now, I’m sure your photo archives are full of pinks. And who needs nature to see pink, right?

Since summer is basically here, it’s time for water sports and I won’t be caught dead (poor pun, I know) without my pink life vests. More about water in a minute.

Portland’s Parade of Pink

Portland, Oregon, is home to the Portland International Rose Test Garden. It has been a few years since I visited, but the gardens are stunning. Roses really love the climate and in fact, Portland is known as “the City of Roses.”

Last week we spent the weekend in Beaverton, a suburb of Portland, Oregon to gather with my cousin and our family as she put her beloved husband to rest. We stayed in an Airbnb in the Highland area and I had the chance to take a walk through this gorgeous neighborhood. It was a bit overcast so the various lush shades of green made the pink pop even more so! Please enjoy my gallery of pink roses and other pink florals.

I was THISCLOSE to visiting my blogger pal Cee but we didn’t have time. These florals are shared for Cee’s Flower of the Day challenge.

My mom’s birthday was this week (June 9th). She would have been 81. Turns out she shares her birthday with blogger Anne Leueen of Horse Addict! Anne shares her spot-on thoughts on aging and I miss my mom every day. My mom wanted to be healthy and she strove for an active lifestyle. But RA and dementia took their toll and she passed in March 2020. Before we sold mom’s house last August, my daughter attempted to rescue her beloved roses.

Sadly, the two plants did not survive our trip north. I intend to plant some roses in her honor once we figure out our backyard landscape plan.

As I continued my walk, I found the opening to the suburban trails that so uniquely define the Beaverton-Tigard neighborhoods. I happened along a youth baseball game in progress and stood for a moment to watch youth playing, as proud parents watched the game. Even this mom was in a pink mood to go watch her child play baseball!

Inspired by Lisa’s Bird Weekly challenge, at the 11th hour, I found a freckled hummingbird in my archives, interestingly surrounded in pink.

Closer to Home

I felt I was in heaven on Memorial Day as we took the eight-minute drive to Tumtum, a lakeside resort area that sits on the oxbow of the Spokane River, dammed on either side to create Long Lake. This was our first time paddling in Washington waters and on my brand-new inflatable pinkish-purple SUP. Hans got in on the action, too, as we took turns watching the dogs.

  5. Great shots…the rose gardens are gorgeous in Portland. It’s been a few years since I’ve been there. The Japanese gardens are stunning as well if you ever get to go there. Glad you had a good trip. We spent lots of time in Beaverton over the years for soccer tournaments. My moms favorite flower was a yellow rose. After she passed away a friend gave me a yellow rose tree. It was so pretty but I was so sad the next year when it bloomed and was pink instead of yellow. I didn’t know that happens with grafted things. It was still pretty but I wanted the yellow to stay.
    I made it around to quite a few posts from last week….but I realize I miss a lot so now I wait until the next week when you post the links. Makes it easy not to miss. I like visiting everyone if I’m able.

  10. You were in my neck of the woods, Terri. But I’m so sorry that it was death in the family that brought you here. My condolences and for your loss of your mom too. The roses here are wonderful, aren’t they? I’m glad you got a walk despite the less than perfect weather. Hugs.

    I’m a guy who loves pink. After all, it takes a real man to wear pink clothing. My contribution is a pink rhododendron from our hike at Crater Lake last week. They were in great abundance. Looking forward to celebrating the solstice! Joe

    • Thanks, Graham. Portland loves those roses. I just discovered this morning that the Little Spokane River doesn’t allow SUPS! But kayaks are OK, go figure. Now I’m going to have to check out an inflatable kayak!

    • Thank you, Marsha! I literally threw the bird in there late yesterday. I looked thinking I had a flamingo, lol! Today was hot here and we both went to an early church service and stayed in the rest of the day watching Hallmark movies! Hans needed a day off after jab #2 and building a gazebo for our deck.   32. Beautiful photos Terri, and I happen to LOVE pink! I’m in Brisbane Australia and we’re in winter now but still getting shades of pink. My camellia’s are flowering at the moment and are a beautiful vision of pinks! Have a wonderful week ahead.

  34. Oh what a lovely catch up and view of PINK from your part of the world. So much is happy and joyful about pink, yet there is a tinge of sadness too remembering the passing of your Mother. My mum loved her pinks, bright mostly, and in fact her ashes were mixed amongst some of her favourite pink flowers and left in Dad’s garden in pots. When Dad moved house, he brought them with him….but the sea and salt close to him meant they did not live long. Yes, we all have our memories and that is very important.     • Thank you so much, Denyse 🙂 My cousin is on my mom’s side of the family and she adored them and their children when they all lived in San Diego. It was my cousin’s hubby who passed. I moved away in 1980, and both my cousins (her only brother’s daughters) moved to Oregon and Washington in the mid 90s. She didn’t have much family around except my brothers but she managed to visit me at least once a year before she became ill. Whenver I go to Portland, I remember my mom and how much she disliked the rain and long nights, but she loved her flowers! I was happy to link up and will try to do that more often. I enjoyed reading many of the posts and commenting! Have a wonderful week!

  41. Malcolm and I were just discussing the color pink this morning – as in, he wanted pink swim trunks and I said emphatically NO. I acquiesced, he got the trunks. Maybe I’ll take a picture of him wearing them and enter the challenge this week! Then again, maybe not.

    I do love pink in nature though, and your photos are beautiful. Sorry the transplanted rose bush didn’t work out. Have a great week.

  60. It’s almost summer here in Wales, and what better way to get around than on a pink bike, Terri.

    I’ve never seen a pink bike before. Glad you’re back in the water. It must be very easy transporting those inflatables.

    Not sure if this YouTube video will work, but the theme this week reminded me of this song – ‘Lily The Pink’ by The Scaffold.

  62. Terri, my heart goes out to your mother’s death and the loving impact she had on your life. May your memories of her be a blessing. I thought when I opened this post it would be lots of lovely photos of one of my favorite colors – But it’s really about valuing in life what is worthy and beautiful. My dad also loved roses and planted a gorgeous community rose garden at the condos where he and my mom lived. As he lay dying, he gave me instructions about how to care for the roses. He wanted the other residents to enjoy them to their fullest. I still have several dried roses from that garden. Thank you for sharing your story – it reminded me of mine.

    • Thank you for your heartfelt comment, Shari. I was separated too long from my mom by distance, and in some ways, I know she is better off in resting in eternity. She loved many types of flowers and always gave me great advice. I’m told roses thrive here in good conditions, so I hope to plant something she would have loved. How special your father loved his flowers with such a passion–I remember you sharing about his huge plumeria plant. Thank you for putting my words into that perspective.

  63. Pink is such a beautiful color. It almost always makes me smile when I see it – in nature or man-made, like your paddle board. 🙂 I love your new banner, with you on the board, Terri. Very creative. While it wasn’t for fun reasons, I’m glad your trip to Portland brought some color in your life. Looking forward to the sunrises and sunsets next Sunday. I have many of those! Maybe I’ll come up with a couple for your challenge, as some of them are archived in their own folder and would be easy to find…

  66. Beautiful pink. Glad it is June’s color of the month. Fitting, I think. The flowers in your cover photo look liquid or melty like soft-serve ice cream on a June afternoon. Love the softness the filter added. Our neighbors have lovely roses but they hardly water them much less give them any care. Hope you will get some roses planted in your mom’s honor. I have monkey grass in my yard from my childhood home. Will join you the end of the month.
