Sunday Stills Monthly Color Challenge: Views in #Violet

I’m back to hosting Sunday Stills! A huge thank-you to my friend Marsha at Always Write for taking the reins for three weeks while we moved into our new house. I certainly missed you all while away from blogging although I tried to follow some posts when possible. We are still without an internet connection in the house.

This week’s photo challenge is to explore the color violet and other shades of purple. Here is an example to get you started.

But before I share my other violet interpretations, I want to share my versions of “emerging” which was the theme from last week. When I originally chose that theme for March 28, I wanted to celebrate my emergence from winter to spring as well as emerging from living in temporary housing conditions to our new home. Strangely, I had no idea that we would be able to move in on March 22, but fate and kismet seemed to work in my favor to some degree.

I read many of your emerging posts, and I was really excited to read Donna’s post. She is a planner and wanted to finish off March with her take on emerging. Marsha’s post on emerging also inspired mine as we have both moved away from California to new states to begin new lives.

Please indulge me as I share some of my emerging images. As many of us are still somewhat restricted to travel, I looked through my archives for theme inspirations. I found this image of a molting adult dragonfly emerging from its old exoskeleton a few years ago. Many of you have seen this image, but I wanted to share it again as it epitomizes emergence and changes in nature.

Once we moved in, we emerged from uncertainty and impatience to a rural neighborhood with lovely neighbors and a relieving sense of peace. Oh, and the quiet! Even the deer emerged out of the forest to welcome us the next morning.

Spring gets a slow start here in Northeastern Washington state, with overnight April temps still just above freezing. Warm days ensure welcome sights of tree and flower buds as well as a variety of birds. Despite the absence of blooms, the morning light paints an amazing picture of the actual Nine Mile Falls!

Now for Some Violet!

We celebrated Easter Sunday at our new church and enjoyed their tech displays during worship.

April was the month when we traditionally moved our RV to its summer home in the Sacramento delta as windsurf season ramped up. Plenty of violet sunsets in the spring. Yes, my hubby misses it a little now that we are in Washington.

A House is Now a Home

Many of you saw on Facebook that we got the keys to the house on March 22. Has it only been 4 weeks since we moved in? I don’t have too many pictures to share just yet, as we are living among boxes while we await the pole barn/garage to be built. Once that is completed, we can move a lot of boxes into that space and decorate the house appropriately.

Tech Woes

Since we are still without wi-fi, I can use my phone hotspot to access the online world. My mobile phone has also given me some trouble in trying to access WordPress posts. I have had to go through the Reader rather than my e-mails or else I have to log in to WP each and every time just to leave a comment! Never fear, with your direct links to my blog and in the comments, I can still read and comment on your posts without having to log in!

Without wi-fi, I have trouble syncing my Dropbox to my phone where most of my photos reside these days. My work-around? I posted some images to Facebook and saved the images to my desktop and simply uploaded them into my WP media file. The few I did not post, I started a draft post on my WordPress app and dropped a few images from the phone into the media file. Clever? Desperate? Yep!

I always felt “my” Anna hummingbirds were my pets since I provided a safe backyard and food for them over the years so I’m sure you will see a hummer or two along with my dogs.

    • Thank you so much, Natalie! I’m told there are moose around here too! We have to keep a close watch on our two dogs when they go outside in the wee morning hours so they don’t try to chase the deer. We are just grateful to be here and enjoying this life!

    • Thank you, Kirstin! We’re so happy to be here and it seems longer than 4 weeks. I miss seeing flowers like those daisies but we seem to have rogue sunflowers or coneflowers popping up all over our property, which is nothing but dirt now. I see a lot of fences around here to keep the deer out of people’s gardens. I’ll be back to read your post soon!

  4. Hi Terri, just a quick note to welcome you back and congratulate you on moving in! You must be SO happy to have the angst behind you and to be enjoying the new home you’ve worked so hard to get to! Your little deer are precious and good proof of the quiet of the new neighborhood!
    Sorry about the tech woes but of course this too shall pass! I learned the hard way to make sure all of my images are stored locally on external drives (very easy/fast access) and backed up both locally and on Backblaze on the web in case of disaster. I use Dropbox for my work editing our Naturally Kiawah magazine because it’s the vehicle of choice for the organization but must admit I’m not a fan. More power to you on that!

    • Hi Tina, thank you for checking in! I have a couple of external hard drives, but do I use them? Oh well, I can always run over to my new neighbor or my SIL and borrow their wifi and get things downloaded. Like you say, this shall pass.

  5. Welcome back & cheers to moving into the new place. Hope the new church works out. Always a thrill, but oh so much work. I may have my purple beach walk done by the end of the year, oh well … I missed out. Love the opening pic …. my fav in the collection. Hang in there with the WiFi woes.

  8. Welcome back, Terri. Sorry to hear your internet is taking so long. What’s the holdup? Still, you’re in your new house and that must be exciting, getting things organized for the longer term rather than a temporary situation.
    We don’t have deer here, but in Western Washington they were the scourge of the garden. A tall fence is essential and once that’s up, having dogs inside it will discourage them too.

    • I blame the popularity of CenturyLink for the delay, Graham. This particular unit specializes in rural fiber networks and since ours is new and runs underground throughout the subdivision, my contact tells me they are overbooked in construction, which seems to be par for the course in Eastern Washington. I’m happy to still be able to connect for now. Moving is going well, the POD is gone and the pole barn frame was delivered last week, so that construction should start shortly! There is a healthy mule deer population and everyone has at least a 5 foot fence around their fruit trees and veg gardens. We are working on getting a fence in the near future. Thank you, Graham!

    • Thank you, Donna! We are so pleased but work so hard every day to unpack, move things and make everything look good! Yesterday, I thought of you while we visited Colville WA, about 40 minutes from the Canadian Border. I told my hubby that I have a lot of friends in Canada and feel so much closer to them 🙂

  23. Welcome back Terri, even if you have to get here via a roundabout! I love your violets and purples especially the bright violet square! And wow – the dragonfly picture is amazing!!

    Here on the west side of the mountains we’re had blue sky, sunshine and record breaking temperatures all week, even reaching 80 degrees yesterday! Perhaps I brought the good weather back from California! 🙂

    I used that photo in one of my photo challenges from many years ago now. I hope it fits in with the theme?

    Sorry to hear about the wifi problems. I hope they get sorted soon. I’d have been totally stressed out by it all by now, even knowing there was not much I could do about it.

    So glad you’re settling in, even if there is still a lot to do. Having deer in the garden must be great, although I noted your comment about having high fences to stop them from eating your future garden.

    I hope you get some news about the wifi this week.

  37. Terri, Congratulations on the move! I’d be really frustrated with the lack of Wifi but sounds like you are adapting. Plus, there is always lots to do when you first move in a new home. My response to your challenge has a few pics from Washington (sigh!).

    • Thank you so much, JP. Very happy to be back and have my phone cooperate in letting me read and comment on WP. Nine Mile Falls saw 75 degree weather the last couple of days, way above average. In fact we could use some rain. I’m over what little snow we got this mild winter. Be safe!

  45. Welcome back. Terri! Violet, or purple, is my favorite color, so I’m glad it is this week’s theme as I see Sunday Stills posts pop up everywhere and brighten my day. I’m so glad you have moved in and will soon have a semblance of normal again. Once you have broadband internet. 🙂

  46. Keeping up with the challenges is hard enough without technology issues, Terri. Love your lilacs (we have some double osteospernums in that colour brightening our lives too 🙂 ) Glad you’re home and almost settled. So nice to have visiting deer!

    • Thanks, Jo, I’m able to see and respond to any links to my blog from my phone so thank goodness it’s working. I still prefer posting the old fashioned way using a laptop which requires Wi-Fi. Every day I unload several boxes so I’m glad to get it done little by little. I’m so glad to be back to the blog!

  63. Welcome back! Your house is looking great! I love purple and you had some beautiful shots of its many shades. I’m so excited that it’s almost time for our area’s Jacaranda trees to bloom… then there will be purple aplenty. Hopefully I’ll have something for next week’s SS topic. 🙂

    • Hi Janis! Great to hear from you! I had so many purple images, it was crazy, and I didn’t even include the jacarandas. Yes, they will bloom soon, they are so gorgeous, and if I recall correctly you have quite the show in your neighborhood to look forward to! Yes, hop in next week with some San Diego ocean scenes!
