Sunday Stills: The #Textures of Our Lives

A similar theme to weathered from a few weeks ago, textures all around us seem to be abundant in Autumn. As we bundle up for warmth in the northern hemisphere, we wrap ourselves in textures.

Art is the colors and textures of your imagination.

This week’s theme for Sunday Stills is texture if you haven’t figured that out already. Reminder to title your post differently than mine.

Our backyard was home to many species of birds. My favorites were the hummingbirds that darted and cavorted in and through the redwoods I planted years ago.

This little hummer was puffed up after a rain shower and is submitted for Lisa’s Bird Weekly Challenge (birds in color and mono) using “image compare” with the block editor. I also added the desaturated black and white version to Cee’s Black and White Challenge, Close-ups.

Man-made Textures

I meant to post this image of the fence for the previous auburn color challenge but find it works for texture, too. This is called a pine-pole fence which is what will eventually surround our new property.

The Textures of Our Lives

My daughters traveled to our house to spend their last Thanksgiving there before we move out in two weeks. Both were very young when we moved into the house in February 1988. My youngest was only a month old and it’s really the only house she ever knew until she moved out of the area in 2016.

We say goodbye to our family home

Hubby took some pics as my daughters reminisced how the house transformed the textures of our lives into indelible loving memories. After a walk through the house, hugging corners and outdoor trees, the girls drove away on Friday with tears in their eyes.

I discovered these partial lyrics written by Melissa Schneider (can’t seem to find a song that goes with these heartfelt words). Get a tissue…

And I’m sure feeling low

  1. I’m sure it’s bittersweet saying goodbye to that house. So many wonderful memories. Glad you were able to enjoy Thanksgiving with your daughters before the big move. Eek, I’m already getting stressed for you just thinking about the move. Deep breaths!

    Moving is a tough task, but it won’t be long before you can sit, put your feet up, and take a deep breath because it’s behind you.

  10. Beautiful post Terri, and yes, the ginko leaves are a favorite for me as well. I understand completely your nostalgia about leaving your home after so many years. Here’s to the memories you take with you and those yet to be created in your brave new world!

    • Thank you, Tina. It’s bittersweet and I mentioned to another blogger that making the changes in the house helped us all move on. I can’t wait to explore the kinds of trees that grow in Spokane. I’m already planning to have dogwoods, aspens and some pines.

  11. I agree with everyone that your gingko picture is gorgeous. Nice to have the picture of your daughters and their growing up home. That will be a special memory for years to come. The poem says it all, doesn’t it? It won’t be long now. It goes by so quickly.

  33. Goodbye Home is just sad! My daughter called today crying. She was pulling out of the driveway of her old for the last time heading to her new house across town. Sadness all around! 🙂 Love the block editor that you chose for your bird this week! 🙂

  35. Your yard is looking very autumnal, Terri. And I love the photo of you and your daughters. I’m glad to hear they spent Thanksgiving in the house they grew up in. I expect you talked about many memories that included the house over the days they were with you.

    Here’s my photo for this week’s challenge.

    I used the photo in a post a few days ago, but I love all the different textures this snowman has. From the wood to his tin hat, scarf and bell-buttons, he has many textures.

    And before I forget, Happy Birthday to you for later this week. I hope there’s some cake involved on the day itself.

    • Aww, thank you, Hugh, for remembering my birthday! We still have food in the freezer to try to eat before we move next week, including two pies, so I’ll have pie! Your snowman is really cute and shows great textures. That would be a decoration I would enjoy seeing in my house! Things are bittersweet as we pack everything for the move. But they have begun work on the property after delays with the permit! Exciting times, as we say around here!
