Sunday Stills: A Celebration of #Leaves

How is it November first already? This morning, here in the US, we set the clocks back to end daylight saving time. Lighter in the morning, darker at night, but I am glad to get that hour back!

This week’s Sunday Stills challenge theme is all about leaves. No matter where you live, you may have some kind of display of leaves, whether they are newly green from spring in the southern hemisphere or a downright festival of leaves here in the northern hemisphere.

Believe it or not, here in Northern California, our leaves have not turned yet due to unseasonably warm weather. Once it gets cold enough overnight, the sap stops running within the trees and leaves start the process of changing colors to eventually drop as the trees become dormant.

My current leaf images were gathered from central Oregon and Spokane, Washington during last week’s road trip to move another load of household items.

Our trip was delayed due to an Un-Named truck rental company’s decision to cancel our reservation for no reason. Although we were delayed by two days, we eventually got a great deal on the new rental and saved $1,400. To do this we had to drive the 20-foot truck there and back. Apparently, a lot of folks are moving out of California and trucks are not making it back. Oops, that would be us.

So while hubby drove the first two days, I captured some fab Fall leaves on the road.

Once we got into Spokane, I wandered through my BIL’s backyard and took a lot of pics. I took these on Tuesday and Wednesday before we left early Thursday morning. On Friday, a major winter storm landed in Spokane, Eastern Washington, and Western Idaho and dumped over 7 inches of snow, breaking an October snowfall record from 1959! One more day of lingering and we would have been delayed getting home.

Needless to say, most of the beautiful leaves dropped like stones after the first snow! This image was taken two years ago right after the first snow on Veteran’s Day.

  1. Your leaves are really beautiful Terri, loved them all as well as your story about your continuing move. Quite a saga you’re building on that! Good for you for overcoming the rental cancellation with a better option. My favorite of your images this week is the frost on the leaves – very unique!

  2. Lovely leaves! Here the peak time of autumn colours has passed, but the occational burst of yellow is still showing. We set the time back an hour last weekend so I´m slowly adjusting to “winter time”. 🙂

  17. Beautiful leaf images, Terri. Wow, a $1400 savings … way to go. Hopefully, the hot summer is behind you and cool fall breezes are in your future. I was excited to see your November photo challenges. Starting off with “leaves” was, of course, easy for me after my month of shooting autumn foliage in the north.

  21. Hi Terri, Beautiful fall leaves are one of my favorite things. Your pictures are gorgeous. We have already lost most of our leaves; it has been an extremely windy fall. Last night’s winds took pretty much any leaf that was hanging on to see November. I’m glad you were able to get a truck- i didn’t know that moving out of California to the country was a thing!

  23. That super bright red maple leaf is just gorgeous! Wow! We’ve had snow twice this season, but at the moment we can enjoy looking at the leaves on the ground (and some still left on the trees.) I hope you are having a great Halloween. Have a wonderful new week to come.

    • Thanks! I’m trying to drag out fall splendor as long as possible chasing it up and down the west coast, Natalie! I just read Spokane news app saying this may be a La Nina year which means more snow than usual. As long as they get our house built in time, I’m not worried.

    Love the red Maple. Can’t believe that there is snow in Spokane. The leaves in Eastern Tennessee are just past peak, but still beautiful. Here is one taken at Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The colors were bright and varied. Have a great week. Joe

  46. Magical, Terri. I’m glad you got to see some of the spectacular colours of autumn already (even if you did have to drive to see them). Autumn got to us early this year, and autumnal storms have now almost blown down most of the leaves. I love this time of the year, though. We’re due a dry spell over the next week, with frosts and fog at night.

  56. Such vibrant red, Terri! I love those maple leaves. I’m glad to read you managed to snag a good deal during the last trip up. Sometimes, something bad happens for a good reason. I’m finally starting to believe in that “logic” a little bit myself. Fantastic photos, as always!!

  63. As if Covid wasn’t enough, we have all had to contend with record breaking weather. We’ve already had snow which NEVER happens. And the below-freezing temps that accompanied the precipitation, caused the leaves to fall from our few trees before they could change color. Glad you guys came out okay on the moving truck rental. I’ve only visited California a time or two. While it is beautiful, I don’t think I could live there. Hope you guys will be very happy in your new home.

    • As the song says, “what a long strange trip…” Leslie. 2020 certainly has been a wild ride especially for weird weather. We’ve experienced major ups and downs. I even got covid, you can read about that tomorrow!
