The theme for Sunday Stills photo challenge this week is “sky.” Three weeks ago, we shared our sunsets and sunrises. This week let’s look at the sky from other perspectives.
Hot air balloons float in a desert sky. Taken in North Phoenix in early January 2019 with my pal Ingrid.
“The sky is the daily bread of the eyes.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Over the last few weeks, I have been in the right place and time to capture decent images of the moon by day and by night. The daylight moon was taken in late spring and is featured for Lens-Artists Photo Challenge: Spring, hosted this week by Tina Schell.
This was the full moon on July 4th at the Sacramento Delta, framed by the tree. There was still some light in the sky at 8:30 pm, causing my camera to be a little touchy and not getting the clearest shot.
“You cannot look up at the night sky on the Planet Earth and not wonder what it’s like to be up there amongst the stars. And I always look up at the moon and see it as the single most romantic place within the cosmos.”
Tom Hanks
A spring sky in the delta featuring a brooding sunset is enhanced with the Painnt app filter.
“Late afternoon on the West Coast ends with the sky doing all its brilliant stuff.”
Joan Didion
Back on Earth, a newly-blossomed sunflower provides a skyward perspective as it turns toward the sun. Cee’s Photo of the Day.
Two previously featured photos show the sky from the perspective of autumn leaves…
…and the vast blueness punctuated by the flight of the Blue Angels in their annual Sky Show.
And while you are thinking of your perspectives, drop by Becky B’s July Squares challenge this week.
“God and Nature first made us what we are, and then out of our own created genius we make ourselves what we want to be. Follow always that great law. Let the sky and God be our limit and Eternity our measurement.”
Marcus Garvey
What do you see in the sky? Rainbows, clouds, birds, airplanes, superman (as the title suggests), hot air balloons, vast blueness, drones? I can’t wait to see your interpretation!

Terri,
Love this, especially since we will be in Big Sky, MT on Tuesday for a six day visit. Hopefully, Big Sky will live up to its name and I will have something to share. Love your moon pics. Joe

Nice photos, Terri. I like the big, beautiful moon and the hot air balloons particularly. I like the idea of seeing balloons here, but the trouble is they’d be over the ocean and gone in no time! Here’s my offering this week: https://grahamsisland.com/2020/07/12/the-night-sky-2/

Thanks, Graham, we have another moon this weekend that looks like that one. I don’t know why I never noticed before or tried to photograph it. Another blogger inspired me.

I have to look twice with partial moons. It never fails to surprise me that the transition to the side of the moon in shadow is totally invisible.

I’ve never been able to capture the moon in a photo that showed off its true beauty, Terri. I don’t think my iPhone has a good enough camera so photographing something that is thousands of miles away.
Sometimes, you can also look down at the sky.

We have noticed some spectacular moons here this summer. Maybe it is because we are making it a point to go outside in the evenings during Covid stay at home, but I have never noticed the moon as much as I have noticed it this summer. Perhaps less air pollution plays a factor as well, but we are certainly enjoying it.

It’s nice that the moon and stars are in our own backyards, so to speak. You are right about less pollution and clearer skies, Michele!

Very nice images! I have yet to get a good shot of the moon. It always turns out blurry, even when I use a tripod. One of these days… 🙂
