Isn’t yellow a lively, cheery color? When I think of August, I think of heat, which makes me think of cloudless, sunny skies, at least out here in the West. I’ve always associated the month of August with the color yellow.
You guessed it, this week’s Sunday Stills theme is anything yellow.
I added “mellow” to my yellow to take the edge off, but our summers here are anything but mellow. Maybe it won’t seem so hot!
Jennifer Bourne, fellow local blogger and co-producer of the Sacramento WordPress Meet-Up and lead organizer for WordCamp Sacramento shared:
“Studies show that the meaning of the color yellow can be warmth, cheerfulness, increased mental activity, increased muscle energy. The color yellow helps activate the memory, encourage communication, enhance vision, build confidence, and stimulate the nervous system.”

Lest you think this post is all about my backyard sunflowers, I assure you there is more to see.
This busy bee was anything but mellow as I watched her pollen-laden body flit among the sunflowers last week. I luckily caught her in flight!
Even my miracle pink plumerias have stolen a little sunflower yellow!
To keep us cool in the hot August heat, I share these images of fun in the sun on and near the water.
A great start to the morning. Sunrise over the Sea of Cortez in La Ventana, Baja Mexico.
Windsurfer getting the last of the wind and golden rays before sundown.
These kayaks and yellow stand-up paddleboards at Lake Natoma beckon visitors to come take a ride and cool off!
These boys had the right idea of playing on the beach in Coronado.
Later in the Fall, the color yellow will be everywhere. This is a look at last Fall’s ginkgo trees on the Sacramento State University campus.
Flower images are inspired in part by Cee’s Flower of the Day photo challenge.
Welcome new Sunday Stills participant IBall Round the World!

Yellow IS my favorite color. Because it’s happy and bright!! I try to wear it often yet many retailers don’t carry it (another reason I love thrifting!!)
XOXO

Those sunflowers are lovely. They’re such cheerful flowers to have in a garden. I’ve gone with a butterfly for my offering: https://grahamsisland.com/2019/08/04/large-orange-sulphur-butterfly-2/.

I find yellow an intriguing color, Terri. You captured some great examples in nature and I really like that reflection of the kids in the receding ocean water at the beach. The shot of the bee in flight is a lucky one! Enjoy the rest of your “mellow” summer. 🙂

Fun challenge Terri. Sadly yellow is NOT among my favorites simply because it looks awful on me! I do love bright yellow flowers and things – like bikes and skateboards. It does feel like a fun color😊. Your images are spot on for the challenge

Haha!! We both went with the same mellow yellow in our title this week! I love yellow and have shared a few of my favourite shots plus the story of the yellow bikes in our area. I love that quote about yellow by Jennifer and agree 100%! Your shots are lovely Terri and such a great mixture of what yellow looks like, especially the sunflowers, I’ve used one in my post too. The only difference between us at the moment is that August does not mean warmth to me, as it’s still winter here!! Although my sunroom does get nice and warm during the sunny winter days 🙂 . https://debs-world.com/2019/08/04/feeling-mellow-yellow/

I love yellow – I saw the rain coat I’m wearing in my picture on the sale rack; we were only in the store to go for coffee, but I couldn’t resist it. Since I bought mine, the heroine in one of our TV dramas wears a yellow coat and apparently everyone wants one like hers!

As a child, yellow was always my favourite colour. However, as I grew older, it changed to blue.
I love your photography, Terri. Some of your photos would make fantastic prints which could be framed and hang on a wall.
Our sunflowers have not done as well as yours have this summer. We’ve only had brief heatwaves (thank goodness), so it’s probably not been hot enough for them. However, we’ve had a great harvest of potatoes, rhubarb, and gooseberries. Plus, the pumpkins are coming along nicely too.

There is something about yellow in its cheesiness, right Hugh? Lovely to see you back in blog land. Thank you for the wonderful compliments. One of these days, I might print some off on canvases and attend some art shows. I grew a teddy bear sunflower this year thanks to another blogger who sent me some of seeds from his garden. Then my plumeria bloomed surprisingly so my homebound summer has been a backyard photographer’s dream.

How wonderful, Terri. Although our sunflowers have not done well, this summer, we’ve been lucky that many other summer flowers have bloomed. We have a mixture of colours in the garden, and it does help instead of seeing mostly green. However, I can’t wait until the autumn arrives and the new display of colours we will get. In the UK, Yellow is a popular colour during the autumn.
