Stack of papers to be graded

Sunday Stills: Whistle While You #Work

This holiday weekend, Labor Day (in the U.S.), is the traditional end to the summer, as school begins, and vacations are all but over.

According to the US Department of Labor, “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”

Imagine what our country (or any) would be without workers. This holiday was to be in honor of the Labor unions that protect workers from harsh and unrealistic conditions as a result of working in factories.

For Sunday Stills, if you haven’t quite guessed the theme, it is WORK!

We value work so much so that we spend most of our childhood preparing for our future careers.

Which of course leads me into education and my second act in life as a university lecturer. Yes, the featured image above is a huge stack of papers to be graded (from last year)! I won’t see a stack like this until later in the semester.

Some students have to “work” for their leisure! Student jumping off the platform “the dive” in one of our classes. This photo is submitted for “Action” for the Lens-Artists Photo Challenge this week.

Student takes the "leap of faith" 40 feet in the air at the Peak Adventures Challenge Ropes Course in Sacramento.

A summer day in the life at my former career…I trained and supervised lifeguards and swim instructors, and manage to teach a learn-to-swim class every summer. It was still work, but teaching people how to enhance their leisure time and learn new skills was rewarding and satisfying! I might have whistled a note or two while at work!

Share something related to work for Sunday Stills, even if you are no longer working! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Reminder that there will be no Sunday Stills post for Sept 9.

I’m attending my 40-year high school reunion in San Diego that entire weekend (Thursday through Monday), and will not be able to share posts! You can always use an older theme if you miss it too much, by visiting the Sunday Stills Page.

Here is the link-up!

We had over 80 posts in August! Please welcome and visit our new Sunday Stills participants who shared their great photos and posts in August!

  1. Oh …! Have fun at your reunion next weekend! Should be … at the very least … informative … 😉 In seriousness, though, I have the fortune of being a part of a WhatsApp group with my high school buddies (I went to boarding school for high school, so it makes for special bonds of friendship), where we share all manner of stuff, including current photos, so a reunion (not quite 40 but still a long time ago …) would hold less mystery but possibly more giggles. We had a few ‘get togethers’ in the past few years, born out of a tragedy to one of us, where a good number of us pulled together in support for a ‘sister’ and remained close since, enjoying being in each other’s lives again.
Added my contribution to the challenge in the froggy linky dink but here it is copied here, as is my ‘custom’ … 😉

    • You are very lucky to keep in touch Na’Ama with your classmates. We have a Facebook group for the high school and turns out many of my classmates are up here in Northern Cal. We’ve had a few mini-reunions up here and in San Diego over the years, even a trip to Vegas! And of course, we’ve lost a few classmates as expected. Thanks for linking and I’m off to check it out!

      • Yes, it’s the lemonade made out of the lemons of our classmate’s terrible loss of a son. The get-togethers were not a big orchestrated affairs but a ‘whoever can come’ events, and I was able to attend one of them, see photos from others. We, too, have lost a classmate a few years ago. It is, sadly, how life goes, though always heartbreaking. I hope your reunion is fun!

  2. What a way to retire, Terri. You make the best of everything, turning work into play and play into requirement. I bet you’ve got a few things to tell your fellow high school buddies. As for your new office with its spectacular view – I’m a bit jealous – just a wee little bit. No, no, those aren’t my hands reaching out for your new digs – well, maybe they are. 😀

    • Thanks, Janis! I agree that a lot of folks don’t realize how important labor unions are. I’ve belonged to them as a public employee, and so has my husband. Enjoy your reunion, too. I trip is a little short but maybe we have time for a quick coffee since I will be in SD!

  3. Don’t blame you wanting to work with a view of Lake Tahoe, Terri. And I can’t wait to see the finished construction job and your new office.
I don’t think we ever stop working, not even when we retire. There’s always something to do, although I guess we can choose when to do certain jobs once we’ve retired rather than having to do them within a deadline. Then again, deadlines always get those jobs done, don’t they?
Hope you’re enjoying your long weekend (and not having to work, too much).
    Enjoy the reunion next week.

    • I end up taking “work” with me wherever I might be gone for over 24 hours, Hugh! That weekend in Tahoe was amazing and warm for early November. My master bedroom and office was completed 3 years ago. I guess I should have shown a later photo! Here it is Labor Day today and I did some school work, oh well!
