White horse at the fence

Horses in Black and White

If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time, you know I share a LOT of photos, mostly in technicolor! I am happy to write that I am back to stretching my camera lenses with Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenges.

This week’s theme is “animals,” and my entry is this happy, cream-colored horse I met while walking with my Dad on Father’s Day. He lives in the Sierra Nevada foothills (Northern California), in a picturesque, quaint, but very “country” area of his small town.

She came right up to the fence as we approached and her buckskin friend dutifully came along side. This image is in color so you can see the difference from the black and white image above.

Friendly white horse

Dad and I chatted briefly about my old horse Cookie that I loved when I was a young girl living near Portland, Oregon. It got me very nostalgic for my horseback riding days.

For more about my love of horses, you can check out this oldie-but-goodie post, Borrowing Freedom.

“All horses deserve the chance, at least once in their lives, to be loved by a little girl.” Unknown

  1. I try to do Cee’s black and white challenge once in awhile for exactly the same reason. Lately it seems the week flies by before I get organized. And for this one I’d really like to go find some animal that is not Katie…Katie would be too obvious.

  2. Awesome photos, Terri. That black and white is incredible. Now you’ve made me nostalgic and ready to jump on the back of a horse again 🙂 My aunt owned horses in PA when I was growing up, and I used to ride with her. She now lives in AZ and I’m eager to visit…and take pictures! ❤️

  3. I ride horses the way I swim – flailing wildly to keep from dire consequences. But I love horses , love to paint them, to see them, to pet their soft noses. Your photos remind me of everything lovely I find about these animals.

To me, black and white photos are deeply emotional while color is dynamic.

  4. Lovely photos, Terri, but it brought back memories of a horse called Bumble. My sister and I would go horse-riding every Sunday afternoon until Bumble decided one day to throw me off his back. My sister carried on with horse riding while I decided to stay at home.
During my midteens, I then went on to get a job at Chepstow Racecourse. I do like horses, but you won’t get me on one ever again. 😁

    • Aww, too bad, Hugh! Bumble–what a cute name! It must have been fun working at a racecourse, although the actual work may not have been glamorous. I fell off my horse a couple of time when I was a kid, but I was stubborn so I kept at it. I certainly miss those idyllic times. In San Diego is the Del Mar racetrack and I’ve actually won a little $$ betting the horses!

  5. I love this! Beautiful horse! I just moved from Colorafo to the wyoming windswept plains and we are in the process of getting two beautiful horses to add to our lives. It’s been quite some time since I have ridden but I’m challenging myself to get back into it and train one of these girls! Thank you for sharing!
