SpaceX Launch

SpaceX Launch

What is the likelihood of watching a live satellite launch appear above your family home? Unlikely perhaps, but as you can see by the photo it was real!

On December 22, after just arriving in San Diego after a long road trip, we piled into my daughter’s new car preparing to meet the rest of the family for dinner.

As we pulled out of the driveway, suddenly, my daughter exclaimed “What is that?!” We could not believe our eyes as we saw this sight.

I leaped out of the car and took several photos and texted one to my other daughter (she’s an Aerospace Engineer) and asked her.

Of course she knew that Space X launched 10 satellites from Vandenberg AFB in the Palm Desert area of Southern California just moments before.

The small object in the middle of the jellyfish-like shape is a system navigator that eventually burned up. It spun and shifted adding to the incredible sight.

I shared this photo on Instagram. As it moved quickly through the sky it appeared just over my neighbor’s house.

Space X satellite or Santa

I figured it was Santa taking a dry run to break in some of his new reindeer.

If you are old enough to remember the original Twilight Zone episodes hosted by Rod Serling, oftentimes he would sign off the end a show by saying, “filed under … in the Twilight Zone.”

Yes, I’m back to blogging, unlikely as it may seem! Watch for this Sunday’s post for the brand new Sunday Stills Photography Challenge!

And to continue the spacey theme, “May the Fourth be with you!”

  1. I remember that evening when my Facebook feed started to fill up with pictures of that remarkable event! Unfortunately, I happened to be in Northern California at the time so I missed seeing it in person. Thanks for sharing your pictures again! Good to see you back… and May the Fourth be with you too!

      • It is the new technology. It doesn’t work my computer and Amazon policies stink. I had 3 help chats and one phone . I need another but I handle Amazon help system. It clear them not the consumer. I don’t want to buy a new computer as I don’t use very much. Right now it is better than anything else I have. One of feel things I agree with Trump Amazon is too powerful.

  4. Your last sentence is hilarious, Terri. You are such a creative woman. And, that top photo remains one of the most amazing shots you took and that I’ve seen on the web. Just incredible. Fantastic timing, and you having your camera (or phone?) ready! Welcome back to the blogging world!

  5. Wow, that’s amazing, Terri. I would just have assumed it was aliens since I don’t have an aerospace person in the family. Or I would have missed it and kicked myself, which is pretty much what I do. Ha ha. Thanks for sharing!
