I am celebrating my spring break from teaching with some down time! We took a short, 45-minute drive to the Gold Country in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.

Northern Californians know where I am talking about, as popular must-see’s along the scenic, historic drive of Highway 49 include Sutter Creek, Daffodil Hill, Jackson Rancheria Casino, and quaint, California Gold Rush towns.

Early Spring was in full swing with plenty of blooms, abundant greens and of course, tourists!

As we strolled through Sutter Creek’s main street, my camera worked overtime capturing historic architecture, doors (for Norm’s Thursday Doors), flowers and other interesting things.

I was surprised how much the color green is used on many of the doors and facades, whether residential or business. This is linked to the weekly photo challenge It IS Easy Being Green!.

  4. I love those historical buildings and funky doors! Glad you got to visit some of the Gold Rush towns on your break, Terri. Hope the rains are taking a break over there as well. Here, it is supposed to be gorgeous, starting on Monday. 🙂

  6. \what lovely photographs of some really interesting residential doors, the colours are very appealing and, viewing from another country, the wooden, clapboard cladded (I’m really not sure how it’s described in the US?) houses are extremely attractive to to a distant eye…

  17. Nice photos. Looks like a great place to visit on my next trip to the Truckee/Tahoe area. Maybe about 124 miles and slightly more than 2 hours via I-80 to Auburn and south on SH-49. The mining towns, wine, scenery, etc. would be a good trip, and maybe we can include another visit to Yosemite too.

    Thanks do much for featuring our town of Sutter Creek in your blog. The local tradition has it that many of our homes were painted white with green and red accents–to reflect the color of the Italian flag. To go with our own traditional green door and window trim at Serafina House, we also kept our traditional red porch and steps.
