On a trip to the beach on Coronado Island in San Diego, my brother and niece had a rare opportunity to stand in the lifeguard tower as an invitation from the lifeguard. Although I felt the lifeguard was still watching his water, I instinctively watched the beach right after taking this shot. Like I could help.
Swimming is a favorite leisure activity in our family. Growing up in San Diego, it wasn’t hard to find a place to swim. My mom made sure we went to the beach every weekend during the summers as kids. Although we did not have a pool, several of our neighbors did. I swam competitively in high school and college and love to swim to this day. I love participating in all kinds of water sports, including windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding.
My brother is 46 years old and competes in Master’s Swimming which takes him all over California and into other states for national and international competitions. He is ranked 25th in the world in two events!
Both of my daughters were swimming pool lifeguards. They didn’t choose swimming as a sport, favoring softball, soccer and volleyball, but they liked the idea of being summer lifeguard.
Continuing the tradition, my nieces love to swim. My brother and sis-in-law have a healthy leisure lifestyle that includes camping and travel, and lots of trips to the beach. Instead of giving toys to my nieces for Christmas, I buy them a round of swim lessons. I hope to see them in a session next time I visit San Diego.
My niece was so thrilled to get to stand inside the lifeguard tower! I hope she remembers this someday and with her swimming skills, decides to be a lifeguard. I’m sure she won’t get ANY encouragement from ME (wink, wink).
This is my second entry for the Five Day Challenge.
I was invited by Terry, from Through the Lens of My Life to participate in the Five Days Challenge, which asks us to post five photos, one per day for five days, and to write a story to go with each photo. For each day that we post we are supposed to invite one person to participate.
Today I’m inviting Justine from Eclectic Odds N Sods, who already takes amazing photos on her blog. Stop by and take a look! If you would like to participate, post a photo every day for five days and write a story to go along with each photo. Your story can be fiction or non-fiction. It can be a short paragraph, a page, or a poem. Each day, please select one person to carry on the challenge. The challenge is not mandatory and can be refused. I hope you accept and have fun!
